COINTELPRO is the short name for a Counter Intelligence Program. A counter intelligence program is a covert and illegal operation were the Federal Bureau of Investigation aims/aimed to disrupt and intercept information as well as spreading disinformation through out the site, group or organization it has created or infiltrated. It is a known fact that the FBI did carry out these operations, they have admitted doing it in between 1956 and 1971. In the days when it was up and running the enemy was a lot different, in those days it was set up to find communist and socialist groups in the United States. The FBI have went on record saying that the COINTELPRO operations were aimed at "protecting national security, preventing violence, and maintaining the existing social and political order." Some of the people that they aimed for were the Klu Klux Klan, the Black Panther Party and many many more, J. Edgar Hoover was been revealed as saying that his agents jobs were too "expose, disrupt, misdirect, discredit, or otherwise neutralize" their leaders.
