The Center for UFO Studies, or CUFOS for short, is one of the most respected Unidentified Flying Object (UFO) research groups in the United States.

Dr. J. Allen Hynek, who was once the scientific advisor for the Air Force’s Project Blue Book, founded CUFOS in 1973. The research group is located in Evanston, Illinois.

History

Towards the end of Project Blue Book, Dr. Hynek, who started out as a skeptic of UFOs, began to voice his contempt for the way the Air Force handled its investigation of UFOs. He was convinced that there was indeed something to the UFO phenomenon that warranted further scientific study.

After the Air Force closed up Project Blue Book in 1969, Hynek was free to pursue more serious UFO research. After publishing his first official scientific book about UFOs, "The UFO Experience", in 1972, he established his own organization for the collection and analyzing of UFO reports. He named it the Center for UFO Studies, shortened to CUFOS.

In 1978 when the National Investigative Committee on Aerial Phenomenon, or NICAP, was officially disbanded, CUFOS purchased its extensive collection of UFO reports and investigation files.

Dr. Hynek, who died in 1986, named Mark Rodeghier as the successor to run CUFOS. In honor of Dr. Hynek, CUFOS was renamed The J. Allen Hynek Center for UFO studies.

Organization

CUFOS has three main objectives. The first is to maintain a library collection of articles, reports, and investigation files regarding UFOs. This collection is available to scholars and researchers to browse through.

The second objective is to publish good scientific reliable data on UFO sightings and cases, and to publish a periodical, The International UFO Reporter, which contains articles of scientific interest as well as objective material regarding UFO Cases.

The third objective, is of course, investigation. CUFOS investigates not only current UFO reports, but also has teams that investigate historical UFO cases such as Roswell. They also have teams who investigate claims of alien Abduction.
