Always the same the world over, they hide the real news behind some fluffy bunnies or some other non news worthy crap, like
Oh look the Swine flu is man made and will kill you and we're losing the war on terror and the terrorists want to kill you, but hey look over there ,Michael Jackson has died praise be the almighty MJ.

The media has a big role in a country's education. While the whole world has Afghanistan and history in the making in their magazines, Americans get bits and pieces of Hollywood glamour.

IT is true that they do sell what interests the public, but it's their fault in the first place to deny access to valuable news. And thats US media in general, Newsweek alone isnt to blame.

This is not just the attitude of the US MSM. Here in Australia its just as bad if not worse. You only have to go look on the BBC news web site to see what will be news on Australia two days later , if your lucky and no one form a football team has done something stupid again.

The media is pathetic, and the best thing you can do is avoid it.

Pure and simple: The American People are obsessed with "the stars" / "the beautiful people" and disinterested in what is really going on Planet Earth.

We are a nation that watches "Dancing With The Stars" and reads "fluff"

The "educational stuff" doesn't sell.

Most American's consider themselves educated on world events by watching one hour of "news" or reading a "news paper" each day, unaware that most news medias are now owned by a handfull of the most elite individuals on the Planet.

The recent "bail outs" of our top financial institutions, a useless and costly war (no WMD) and the destruction of our Constitution are prime examples of stuff people should have but weren't "on top of".

People would rather read about Angelina's baby vs Naomi Wolf's "End of America".

People would rather watch "The Biggest Loser" vs The Senate / Congressional Channel.

Our society is getting like Woody Allen's citizens in "Sleeper" superficial and dumb.

And that is what the powers that be the real people pulling the strings are hoping for.

PS: Of all the folks out there that voted for GWB how many of you really researched his background?

We are in the mess we are in as a country because too many people see with their eyes and no further.

These pictures just show how much US people are held in the dark, as far as i am informed US only gets US news, someone will properly go apesh!t on this claim, but then i just ask you name me the EC countries, name me some Capitols in EC countries without using google, and it will hit you as a rock how little you know about the world around you when you are getting hypnotized by your TV and its news.

the MSM has trained the general populace to respond to filler & fluff. the public eats it up because it is being spoon fed. like a baby in a high chair.

i'd like to invoke the relevance of the "Bread and Circuses" analogy here.

The Problem here is that by observing the intense dumbing down of the average American's media diet, you are jumping into the mobius strip of ignorance at a midway point. Then again, you have no choice since we are locked into a cycle whose beginning dates back decades and whose end will only come with the severing of the chain.

We need to improve education in this country, but before we do that we need to be able to improve the attention span of the average American to the point where they can begin to comprehend the problem. We need to introduce critical thinking and analytical skills into the fundamental curriculum that will shape our nation's youth. We need them to be able to dissect situations, find causes, and map solutions.

Meanwhile, we have a cultural conspiracy in this country which has fetishized results free of process. People want to look at pictures of the wealthy and fabulous being fabulous and wealthy. It gives them something to daydream about since daydreams have usurped ambition as the fuel of the American Dream.

Big huge stories about the complexity of our foreign policy clusterf*ck hurt most readers' brains. They have been conditioned against imagining a clear course of action. They think only of results. They're question upon seeing the situation would not be: "What would we need to do take a 'Withdraw and Contain' approach to these lawless areas of the world?" it would be "Why can't the situation be made better."

TBTB like that people stick to simple questions. They do not like being unable to answer them. As such, they keep the pablum coming. Pay no attention to the bodycount behind the curtain, check out the hot fall fashions instead.

The simple fact is that there are publications which break it all down for people. They can access these publications at any large chain bookstore. But people don't go to bookstores anymore. They get all their reading material at the checkout counter of the local Piggly Wiggly.

Well I say, to hell with them. Anyone who's getting their news from Newsweek or Time learned about Wuthering Heights and Call of the Wild from Cliff's Notes.

I can do that no problem. There are maybe a few of the newer ones that have split up since I was in school, but I can pretty much name atleast 90% of the countries in the world.

The media is biased and full of crap most of the time, but you can't blame it for peoples poor education. It's not like they can't find the information, or like it's not taught in schools.

Can't say them all for sure. I only learned where Honduras was last week. I thought it was in Asia, and that wasn't even close. And I might would miss some of the "stans" that don't show up in the news very much. But most of Europe is easy.

Capitals would be hit or miss however.

Can you name all 50 states of the US and their capitals? Because that would be more way more than the EC.

It's truly sad, and you are right. Something to remember, if America wakes up from the fog they are in, the fall from the mountain top of ignorance is going to be painfull. When the reality of the situation becomes evident for the masses, it will be way past too late to do anything about it.

The sheeple of the US are being fed exactly what they demand as their world crumbles around them. The PTB knows exactly what they are doing, and they have had years to perfect it. Now is time to impliment the plan, and they are going full bore.

It's a sad , sad thing to watch, and yes, the sheeple deserve what they get.

It was in 2005/2006 that all of the media outlets started doing surveys regarding people's "interest" in the war and found, overwhelmingly, that war had fallen by the wayside in the mind's of Americans.

If I recall, Americans were generally found to be "tired and disgusted" with news from Iraq and wanted more "positive" news.

Perhaps the problem really lies in the fact that they couldn't find any positive news to write about in the US -- which left us with just celebrity nonsense to remind us that "see, the 'American Dream' does exist...."

You want to know why we have headlines like "Scary coworkers -- how to survive them" and "Sotomayor was schoolgirl with focus, friends say" ......

There is estrogen in our tap water, look it up. We don't have that many real men left in America anymore. This country is without a doubt the worst place to live if you are a white male right now. Did you know the suicide rate is 7 times higher for a man between the ages of 18 - 25 than it is for a woman (in the usa)?

The media is sad, but these are the least of the evidence. This story is from at least 8 years ago first of all. Secondly, these publications have committed many more recent acts that prove them to be nothing more than propaganda rags.

They both have been in the pocket of democrats and more recently the white house. They trashed both wars for 8 years, outed actual operatives, outed intelligence and methods. Now they're in the business of spinning the other way, or just blacking it out completely.

So yes, our MSM is trash and there are many more recent examples to point to.

EDIT: just look at the difference in coverage of Sotomayor and Roberts/Alito. The media trashed Roberts and Alito for weeks on end and now their doing their damndist to defend and cover for Sotomayor.

Education or lack there of is part of the problem.

I don't know about the rest of you but the schools in my area are a joke. More rewards are given to students for fund raising than for perfect papers. A water park in my area was the priority yet the high school needs books. An English class here had no books so the teacher, on his own time, put a book together on CD but some kids didn't have a PC. This was an accelerated English class my son took.

Children are graduating from high school and can't read others that are dropping out are lucky if they retain anything from the 3rd grade on. Pretty soon all our media will be like a picture book. Can't digest much from a picture of a war torn area without text but pictures of Angelina & Brad speak a thousand words to the illiterate.

It's as though nothing else is happening, like the 3 wars we are in, killing millions of innocent people, bird flu-WTF?, the news media is compliant with our criminal government, and I strongly suggest one gets his news from alternative sources, while you can!

When I stopped watching TV several years ago, I found myself living in a totally different reality than those who get their news from TV. It's absolutely amazing how my friends and family who are addicted to TV, think everything is ok and the economy will come back any day and I am not patriotic cause I don't support the wars.

It is difficult to be optimistic for the future when the majority are brain washed and hypnotized by their TV sets.

Although I agree that the american media is extremely biased for what they choose to post or not post. But from what I've gathered from the news and everything else, progress in afganistan is slow if progressing at all. They also state on American television that this is the biggest challenge for the amrican military. So I do agree on a large scale they are biased but from what I've gathered from our media on the war in afganistan we aren't winning, at least not at the moment.

Like it or not the Michael Jackson story is BIG news in several respects. Number one, his doctor was illegally using an operating room paralytic outside of a hospital, that is indisputably newsworthy. Number two, the adoption mess is a big deal, he may never have actually adopted those kids and they are not biologically his why may set a precedent in future adoption cases. Not to mention the court's decision on their placement may also affect future adoption custody cases.

The biggest of them all is the huge financial losses of the English promoters who are set to lose EVERYTHING on this tour and who are going to take a bunch of other related businesses out with them. Not to make a gross comparison but it is a mini-Madoff for the English concert industry from the way it is being described. PLus. the estate does owe roughly $450 million to the IRS. If they can't recoup that from the estate it's going to go to the taxpayers, that is newsworthy.

I work in the media and admit that the judgement is poor much of the time but if you guys want to blanket bash it, try working in the industry for a while and see how it really works.

This why ATSNews is going to be a leader in the new technologies in information techniques.

As the final touches are being made to the news area, just be patient and know that something very new is about to be born not just for ATS members but the general public at large.

There will be something for everyone.

If you were aware of the anti-american bias the UK media shows towards the US, you wouldn't be so quick to rush into their welcoming socialist arms.

Our media is a disaster though, no argument there. Serious journalism either consists of Fox trying to scare us with the next great terrorist attack, CNN finding new ways to fawn over Obama, or MSNBC telling us how evil conservatives are.
