I have never seen the white area actually touch the poles!! Are the northern lights in full effect?

Is this normal?

Experts please advise.

Yup. It means the magnetosphere is reacting to a healthy breeze in the solar wind. The color scale of the simulation "tops out" very early, 3.6 nPa is not at all a high level of pressure. I believe the simulation uses such a limited scale to make it easier to study the gradations of lower levels of pressure.

No extreme auroral activity is to be expected. Some, but not below 60º

Thanks Phage! You are the man when it comes to astronomy.

Makes sense that they would make the graph easy to read in that way. I noticed that about a week ago solar wind was at like 335 km/sec, and today it was over 500 km/sec.

What is the highest solar wind you have seen? What is average?

Can you post some images from the magnetosphere of what extreme solars storms look like, or a link?

Thanks again for the input.
