I get the same "model" impression when I see the Kaguya images.
I can't really put my finger on what it is but something just seems not quite right.

But then again I get the same vibe from a lot of astronomy photos, like the ones of Saturn and the moons of Mars, like this one: (large image!)



Maybe it's because the optical conditions are so different from what we are used to, or maybe it's something else...

Looking forward to the images from Chandrayaan-1

That's because it is a model. There are two Terrain cameras that point in opposite directions. One facing forwards and the other backwards. With these images they can create a stereo image which they can use to generate a 3d topographical map of the surface on the computer. They also use the images themselves as a texture that's applied to the 3d model. It's just like Google Earth with it's 3d surface.

The images in the slide show are actual images of the Lunar surface taken with the HDTV camera.
