Royal Navy Aircraft Carrier propulsion:
COGAG (Combined Gas and Gas), 2 Shafts
RN Type 23 frigates:
Turbines: CODLAG (Combined Diesel and Gas) - 2x Rolls Royce Spey gas
boost
Diesels: 4x GEC-Alsthom Paxman Valenta
Electric: 2 x GEC motors
RN type 42 Destroyers:
COGAG (Combined Gas and Gas) turbines, 2 shafts,
2 turbines producing 36MW
RN Albion Class Assault Ships:
2 x 6.25MW & 2 x 1.56MW diesel generators driving two AC motors through twin shafts and a bowthrust unit, all operating at 6.6KV. RNs first integrated
Full Electric propulsion ships.
HMS Endurance Ice Patrol Ship:
2 Bergen BRM8 diesels, 8160hp, 1 shaft with controllable pitch prop and bow and stern thrusters
Castle Class Patrol Boat:
2 x Ruston 12RKC 5640hp diesels, 2 shafts
River Class Patrol Boat:
2 x Ruston 12RK 270 Main Engines developing 4125kW @ 1000rpm
As can be seen, Rn ships use Diesel, Gas and Electricity For propulsion. To refuel diesel, they either just hook up to a shore pipe, or engage in
replenishment at sea (RAS), which is like air to air refuelling, but with 2 ships, at sea.
