Senators Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) and Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) introduced S. 941 -- the "Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Reform and Firearms Modernization Act" -- on April 30. Senator Leahy is chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, to which S. 941 has been referred.

S. 941 represents the first time such BATFE Reform legislation has been introduced in the Senate. However, the House passed similar legislation (H.R. 5092) in the 109th Congress by a 277-131 vote. A majority of the House -- 224 congressmen -- cosponsored a similar bill (H.R. 4900), in the 110th Congress.

This bipartisan reform legislation is the culmination of efforts to address BATFE abuses and problems that were highlighted in several congressional oversight hearings in 2006.

S. 941 represents NRA-ILA's latest efforts to pass legislation that will make it easier for lawful gun owners and dealers to comply with federal law and regulations, while ensuring that those who break the law are punished accordingly.

This bipartisan bill also serves as a vital step toward modernizing and improving BATFE's overall operations. The bill would roll back unnecessary restrictions, correct errors, and codify longstanding congressional policies in the firearms arena, and is a vital step needed to modernize and improve BATFE operations.

It is slightly reassuring to see that there is at least a feeble attempt to put forward some common sense legislation in regards to gun ownership/sales in the United States.

A bit of additional info...

The bill would allow ATF new powers to issue fines and suspend licenses of firearms retailers (as opposed to current regulations which only allow for license revocation). The legislation would also define what a "willful" violation is and provide for revocation hearings before an administrative law judge, rather than an ATF official.

The way the game is played is when good legislation get's introduced if it actually gets passed in the House and Senate it get's dropped in conference committee. If it does get passed there is language put in the bill that is opposite of what you think it is. The only thing that will be passed here is the bad parts of the bill. I think it's safe to say that the CONgress has long quit representing the people.

If we want to take back our government we only have to options, wholesale noncooperation or overwhelming force as in congressmen and beurocrats hanging by their necks from trees and lightpoles. I believe in nonviolence and think that is always the best way to go and would encourage everyone to stop cooperationg with these bloodsucking criminals.

Actually perhaps something else to consider is instead of non-cooperation with our representatives, the MASS flooding of all avenues of communication with them, i.e. phone calls, faxes, e-mail & snail mail, etc. with civilized, well thought out, tangible examples chronicling their gross deviation from their sworn duties will provide the most direct avenue to bringing them back in line with the desired outcomes to issues that the citizenry seeks.

I don't wish to see our country thrown into violent confrontation with these dunderheads, surely if we collectively stand in steadfast resolve we can display to them the futility of their flippant dismissal of our dissatisfaction!
