2012 is the end-date of the Mayan Calendar. For this reason many people believe something apocalyptic will happen. Some say that an event will happen in 2012, not apocalyptic but spiritual.

Predictions/theories

Tibetan monks who use Remote Viewing have predicted that divine aliens will intervene at a point where the world's governments are about to deploy weapons of mass destruction.

They also say that the world is not ready to be destroyed and that our Earth is blessed and being saved continuously from all kinds of hazards of which mankind is not even aware.

Galactic gravitational plane

It is said that the Milky Way galaxy, like all galaxies, is disk shaped because of a spinning, powerful black hole at the center of the galaxy. The Solar system and the Earth is said to move cyclically into and out of the galaxy's gravitational plane, and that being in this gravitational plane brings some quite dramatic effects. The Solar system and Earth is said to be heading back into the Milky Way's gravitational plane and will get there in approximately the year 2012. The effects that follow are said will be felt increasingly as the year 2012 approaches, and will also be felt for some time after 2012.

Solar Flare

The Sun will be approaching the peak of its 11-year cycle, called "solar maximum", so we can expect a lot of solar activity. Some predictions put the solar maximum of Solar Cycle 24 even more energetic than the last solar maximum in 2002-2003 (remember all those record breaking X-class flares?). Solar physicists are already getting excited about this next cycle and new prediction methods are being put to good use. But should we be worried?

June 6 - Second and last solar transit of the planet Venus of this century.
July 2 - Presidential Elections in Mexico
July 27 - Opening ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London
November 6 - United States Presidential Elections.
November 13 - Total solar eclipse (visible in northern Australia and the South Pacific).
November 28 - Penumbral Lunar Eclipse. The eclipse will be visible throughout most of Europe, eastern Africa, Asia, Australia, the Pacific Ocean, and North America.
December 21 - Possible date for the end of the long count of the Maya and Aztec calendars.
December 22 - Possible date for the end of the long count of the Maya and Aztec calendars.
December 23 - Possible date for the end of the long count of the Maya and Aztec calendars.

from my understanding, this is not at all the case. it is a transitional period into the next phase of humanity. the hopi and many native americans believe similarly.
