Angry Uighurs defy Chinese police
New protests have flared in Urumqi, two days after 156 people died and 800 were injured in the western Chinese city.

At least 200 Uighurs faced off against police in Urumqi on Tuesday following news that 1,434 people were arrested in connection with Sunday's riots.

Trouble also spread outside of Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang, with protests on Monday near a mosque in Kashgar.

Beijing blames ethnic Muslim Uighurs for the violence, but exiled Uighurs say police fired on students.

They also cite a recent government plan that has brought the teaching of Mandarin Chinese in Xinjiang schools, replacing their local dialect.

So China dares settle people where it wants within it's own borders...how dare they.

OMFG, China also dared to teach "Chinese" in Chinese schools, the horror......

There was also a small blurb about a couple of muslims and a "Han" ethnic chinese.

That justifies mass rioting ????

Is this more evidence of the "religion of peace and love"?????????

So if mexicans forced your community to abandon your local culture and dialect that has been there for hundreds of years, you would not mind? If they stop teaching english in your school and stop your culture, and then start teaching spanish instead! and forget about your patriot act etc

Would you not be a little upset?

Yeah yeah you complain with the whole religion of peace comment......that really gets old.......

this is not about religion, they just happen to be muslim, this is about their culture and rights, they were there before china.

Dont Understand the Situation

This has nothing to do with Islam or Christianity or Judaism or even Scientologist. Its about China and they are equal opportunity haters and will crush any uprising no matter what religious banner it falls under....just telling it how it is.

The news here (Canada) said that they were protesting and Chinese security attacked them, so then they rioted. I dont think this is any different from freedom-killing in China, when countless websites are blocked and people have to practice religion in secret, I knew some missionaries who went there and they congregate in basements.

Can you imagine what'd happen in the states, Britain, France, if we had an accident kill over one-hundred people?

By ratio that is an insignificant amount of their population so the government will not care

Seems to me that Muslims just will not comply with the rules wherever they are in the world!!! They want their own rules bought into every country they dwell in!!!!

Um if Im not mistaken they were there first, Mongol-Turks and I read modern day Uyghurs or w/e are caucasian, and converted to Islam. I think it is ridiculous that instead of attacking Chinas lack of freedom you just bash a religion and a region you clearly have no knowledge of. I think only Phoenix here has a real understanding of Islam, hard as I try...

There's no real way to know exactly how many have been killed on both sides just yet.

You like reading articles?

The Hypocrisy and Danger of Anti-China Demonstrations

National boundaries are not natural. They all arise from history, and all history is disputable. Arguments and evidence can always be found to challenge a boundary.

Can we stop with that indigenous argument?

Chinese currency carries five languages: Chinese, Mongolian, Tibetan, Uigur, and Zhuang.
In China, ethnic minorities begin their primary schooling in their own language, in a school administered by one of their own community. Chinese language instruction is not introduced until age 10 or later.

All HANs are required to learn Mandarin from primary school on, while among the Hans there are like tons of different spoken dialects and languages too. What suppression of what culture? This is reality and can be traced and verified if you care enough to put the efforts in it.

China’s one-child-policy seems oppressive to Westerners, but it has not applied to minorities, only to the Han Chinese.
Uygur is popping out babies after babies legally while our government is punishing us for having a second one. This is another reality and unfair fact.

And after all, regardless if you believe it or not, this is a free-travel country, the Uygurs or other minorities are totally FREE in migrating to other parts of the country finding jobs!

Considering this context, China’s treatment of its minorities has been exemplary compared to what the Western world has done to its minorities. After thousands of years of Chinese dominance, there still are more than 50 minorities in China.
To quote another poster in another thread
I have made a desktop image from a map of the density of Han-Chinese by merging it with a map of greater East Asia. It has made an interesting image showing how the ethnic minorities like a wedge swarm far up in China. That, plus learning about the favorable policies of CCP towards minorities sure has made me change my mind.

Why we need a strong hard Central government?
Chinese Civilization was already old when the Egyptians began building pyramids. But the last 200 years have not gone well, what with two Opium Wars forcing China to import drugs, and Europeans seizing coastal ports as a step to complete colonial control, then the Boxer Rebellion, the collapse of the Manchu Dynasty, civil war, a brutal invasion and occupation by Japan, more civil war, then Communist consolidation and transformation of society, then Mao’s Cultural Revolution. Such events caused tens of millions of people to die. Thus, China’s recent history has good reasons why social order is a higher priority than individual rights. Race riots and rebellion cannot be tolerated.

Do you prefer anarchy and chaos in the country with over one fourth of the world population or rather a stable and developing with prospects for a better future for 1/4 of the world population?

Unlike many here. I do not confuse the truly beautiful, glorious and ancient Chinese culture and the present day single party communists. Their government is what 60+ years young? Compared to others around the world they are relative newcomers.

Giving them credit for such a wonderful ancient culture is like giving the Present day Egyptian government credit for the great pyramids or the present day UK government credit for Stonehenge. Sorry I just don't buy it. China is not the China of 3000 or 300 or even 70 years ago. This is the new China and there will be change, BIG change. The Ginnie of freedom cannot go back into the bottle once it's released.

There will be change alright but not the change the Government expected nor wanted.
