It is a very good book about the CIA and it's war on Terrorism. It talks about how the CIA has become very inept in it's intelligence gathering process. It is written by an agent that spent alot of time in the middle east and has alot of insight into the situation.

Look closer
Its kinda conservative though

The CIA's war on terror???? When did that start?

Was it before of after it funded, equiped and trained the Central American death squads? The CIA is up to it's neck in terror.

Okay, did I say terror, just terrorism, and more like a half-handed slap at a bunch of camel-jockeys.

with conducting espionage in the middle east, is that it is difficult for outsiders to infiltrate than other societies. You can't just infiltrate for a short stint, because of how intertwined religion, government, and society as whole are. An agent would pretty much have to totally change his way of life...not just adopt a role. The other side of this, using inside agents...is just as difficult, and for the same reasons. Because of such intertwining...there is increased loyalty...and with increased loyalty...there is less chance of infiltration... The lack of good human intelligence there is a problem that will remain for the forseeable future. The only good news is...it can only get better...as it can't get much worse...

Yeah, the CIA was operating in a vaccum. The KGB is just a CIA conspiracy theory.

We didn't mean to slaughter those people, the nasty men in the KGB made us do it....yeah right.

You can include all the context you want, but it takes evil people to perform evil acts and the CIA managed to employ plenty of 'em.

Both groups got in bed with idiots in Central America. The CIA went there because the KGB showed up to stir up trouble.

Ever since the Soviets invaded Berlin in WWII....they started being troublemakers around the world and the CIA had to follow them. The KGB was experts at killing people, their own people before WWII was over...so they took their dog & pony show on the road.
