obvious audio tampering; but to me, it sounds like he's saying "you won't believe this thing". Thing, not Frank.

I agree... it sounds like 'thing' What would that 'thing' be that caused his excited outburst?

This is one of my favourite strange stories. I would like to know if the astronauts from that mission have ever made any comments on that incident in public? Is there an interview regarding that topic or were they never asked?

The sound was being picked up on the VHF radio used for communications between the Command Module and the Lander. Gene Cernan seemed to be the only one of the three that was very interested in it, to the point of annoying the others. He's the only one who called it "music". It's mentioned five times in the space half an hour (while it was occurring). If it was really "music" I would think there would have been a lot more serious discussion about it. As it was, the conversation was pretty jokey.

Sounds like it was some kind of interference ("whistling sound"), possibly from equipment onboard the spacecraft.

no you were clear, i just thought it was worth mentioning. To me the "thing" was most likely an "event". The event being the astronauts hearing the "music".

I never knew that the sound was picked up by the radio, I always thought it came from outside. Really good explanation, pretty simple. Your post indicates that the astronauts have talked about this incident(Cernan was annoying the others).Do you have any source where I can read more about it?

The part about being annoying is my impression;
"Did you hear it Tom?"
"Yes, he heard it."
(Enough already about the crazy music, Gene!)

If you read the whole transcript you'll see it was a very minor consideration to the astronauts.

I have read that Michael Collins wrote about hearing it on Apollo 11 in Carrying the Fire, saying it was interference. But I don't have the book and can't confirm that.

Ok, thank you. I have read the whole transcript but english is not my first language and such things are pretty hard to detect in a foreign language.

I really wish people would read the entire transcripts instead of picking and choosing conversations that are being totally taking out of context. There was nothng paranormal about this mission..just read the transscripts and especially the parts these people have decided was paranormal. You will find that the parts they choose are not out of the ordinary when the entire transscripts are read.

Very interesting indeed. I wonder though, if it could have been background radiation coming in through the comms system like what is heard by Seti and the big radio telescopes. What really peaked my curiosity is the fact that NASA has not released those conversations and redacted the transcripts! Why!? What could possibly be happening up there that they would need to classify it? Now 40 years later whats the point? Maybe someone would be bold enough to FOIA those recordings. Nice job OP.

Depends on what you think Music is and what it really is.

For instance, This would be music to me, but it is not. It is normal sounds of the universe.

And you are more than welcome to show us exactly how the music comments are in context. It won't take you long really a simple copy and paste and explain the context..

Well when I joined ATS people here enjoyed topics like this... but more iand more ATS is filled with posts like yours. Perhaps its time for a vacation, at least until school starts again
