Wow this is crazy, I wonder what their reasoning is. Apparently this leaves about 250 thousand people without jobs.

Nearly two decades after the first casino opened its doors, Russia is to ban gambling from Wednesday across most of its territory in a move that casino owners say will drive the industry underground.

All casinos and slot-machine halls will be outlawed. With the exception of four far-flung special zones, no gambling will be allowed across the Russian Federation.

What a huge step in the wrong direction economically speaking. Any Thoughts ATS?

Hi tothetenth/

Russia did a good move!
Now if only everyone else followed...that would be great!

People out of Jobs can simply create new ones...I dont know off hand what they might be, but Im sure there are many ideas out there!
It will also save the people from losing any more money.
Is it not true that the Rich get richer, and the poor get poorer?
Well,
The poor are poor!
The Rich just wont get any richer!

What they can do....Grow organic produce and get rid of genetic mutated crops!
This should also be done in may countries...
Ok, I wont go on about the genetically modified foods, as this is not the topic.
Casinos and gambling has caused many unfortunate situations to happen all around the World, not just here and there, but many have lost more then they had!
So, I give
to Russia for this move!

LOL I have a thought. The russians care more about their people then we care about our own...

In bad economic times the simple minded can be prone to do all sorts of things.. Like recklessly gamble their life savings away.

Alot of people will go out of work but they will find new jobs... Many more people will not foolishly gamble away what little money they have left... And the economy of the russian federation will be better for it.

Sure the die hards will hit the underground clubs but the average joe blow will not.

It is an extreme measure... ... It does go against the ideas of liberty... And yet it will prevent their citizens an easy way to flush their rupies away... hmmmmmm.. Maybe its a ploy to increase liquor revenue?

Maybe just maybe they care about their people.

As someone who has worked in casinos for years (thankfully I am not in it anymore), a casino is a horrible place for the public. I think casinos should be outlawed globally. Gambling is truly a horrible sickness. It's the worst drug there is! Gambling can make people lie, cheat, steal, kill, suicide, etc. I have witnessed many things from working in a casino. Sure there are some people out there that can go occaisionally for fun but the majority of people in casinos are living a horrible life and possibily ruining their entire families life.

One casino I worked at was built right by a retirement communitiy. There were countless times I had conversations with retired folks who tell me they have no idea how they are going to make it the rest of their lives because they lost all their retirement at the casino and now are homeless or on the brink of it.

Not that I really celebrate christmas anymore but this story always makes me sad. I was working graveshift on christmas eve once and around 10 am I get couple at my tables having their phones ring and the husband tells the wife "must be the kids wondering why santa didn't come this year", followed by other people at the table laughing and saying "yeah I'm sure we are going to get that call from our kids in a few minutes too". These people were so stuck in gambling they did not even go home at night to make christmas morning wonderful for there kids.

Working in a casino I have seen people gamble in the same chair for 4 days straight without sleeping or changing clothes. I have seen people crap their pants while gambling because they cant stand the thought of getting up and leaving the table to use the restroom. Thats how addictive it is. You can take a married couple who have 0 problems and have an amazing relationship put them in a casino for a couple days and they will be broke, fighting, and want a divorce. People on the outside or the occaisional gamblers really have no idea how bad gambling is.

By closing all casinos yes a lot of people will lose jobs, but a lot more lives could be saved. Sure you will get some people that will still find ways to do it underground but the majority would not and the risk of new gamblers getting started would be much lower.

i was born in ukrain, everything was awesome back 15 years ago there as far as a 12 year old would think. I went to visit 3-4 years ago, and it changes so much!! little casino joints on the corners, kids smoking drinking, etc... my little cousin was running to those casinos playing wasting money at the age of 14-15.. they dont have rules there, you can drink smoke gamble, nobody really cares as long as you dont kill anyone... so im glad they closed them up, sure ... 250,000 maybe lost their jobs.... but 500,000 would waste the money they cant afford to waste... so its a win win situation. 500,000 will save money and 250,000 will figure out a way to make or save money another way. The are always opportunities there, its all about how lazy people are.

Gambling produces no goods. I admit it does put services where they otherwise wouldn't exist, but that's only because in a better managed economy the investment would instead be in a place where there is a real, natural, demand, for these services.

Yes (like closing down an arms factory) it is indeed bad news for the Russian economy, but in the long term it will be established that Russian, consumer money, is being spent in other areas i.e. tangible, economically progressive goods & services, or just investment in businesses (i.e. because the house isn't mortgaged first to pay of debt).

LOL I have a thought. The Russians care more about their people then we care about our own...

Of course they do. As they (unlike us) are led by a God fearing (Christian) people. And so they, unlike us, possess a political class with men of both ambition and vision.

This contrasts with most of the Western world, which when religion was more important (in history it has turned out) was in fact often actually led by secret Satanists-or other "dark arts" followers.
Today (now religion is less important) it continues to led by secret societies, and corruption through lobbying (i.e. people who may as well be Satanists whether they believe in God, Gods, or not).

When you have leaders who care about their people, is it any wonder their agenda clashes with those who don't care anyone but themselves.
This is why the West has many problems with Russia, but they are mostly too shameful to be publicly explained to our people.

Those people employed from gambling saw a very small percentage from what was gleaned from the people. I agree wholeheartedly with others here in that the money could actually go for something tangible instead of illusions of making money by throwing it away. Good for them IMHO.

Silly Russians. IF gambling is so bad why would the American government support casinos on Indian reservations? The US government has always looked out for the best interest of the Native Americans...right?

Belarus will open casinos instead...

RIA Novosti: Minsk to build eastern 'Las Vegas' as Russia, Ukraine ban casinos

Belarus plans to create a gambling zone near its international airport in Minsk to attract foreign visitors as neighboring Russia and Ukraine have banned casinos, an official said on Thursday.

Um. All gambling laws benefit someone... in the US we banned online casinos "For our own good of course" because the lobbyist from Vegas and other states with brick and mortar casinos were loosing lots of cash to the online versions.

Russia bans all casinos.......

Except "four far flung special zones" .. You can be sure, someone somewhere pushed for this bill and will make a killing off it.

We as a society need to get away from the "nanny thinking" thinking because one or two people can't handle something and we need to ban it. Most gamblers are responsible and use it for entertainment only. I like to take $50-$100 every once in a while and have some fun.

Sure, blame the "evil casinos." While we're at it, let's ban alcohol, cigarettes, and krispy kreme donuts (it's for the good of the citizens). I'm not a Russian, so I can't rightfully be outraged, but I will say that if this happened in the United States I definitely would be.

We don't need to live in a nanny state and have the government telling us right from wrong. If someone has a gambling problem, then they should get help, just like someone who abuses alcohol or is overweight. It's not the government's role to protect us from ourselves; it's our own.

edit to say that I don't know why they did it, but I guarantee it wasn't to protect their citizens. I'd bet dimes to donuts that it was about money.

You have to be joking! The US is a nation of Christians, run by Christians, for Christians. 80 percent of the population are Christian, they even vote Christian. Everything happening in this country is happening because of Christian decisions.

I think the casino is a good start by the Russian government, however, it is a drop in the bucket when people are dead set on gambling. They will resort to the underground and the mafia to have their fix. So outlets for gambling will just move underground as one of the business owners mentioned in the article.

However, when the shift occurs it will usually be accompanied by violence when the criminals are running the show. It is the nature of the beast. Organized crime thrives in situations like the one we have before ourselves with a lame-duck economy. One fine example is how Al Capone made off like a thief during the First Depression.
