RAF Tornado crashes in Argyll, Scotland July 09

An RAF Tornado has crashed in Argyll, police have confirmed.

The plane is understood to have come down on a hillside near the Rest and be Thankful at Arrochar - about two miles to the west of Loch Lomond.

The plane is believed to be from RAF Leuchars, in Fife. No civilians are thought to have been hurt.

There are no details on the condition of the pilot and navigator. Strathclyde Police were alerted to the incident at about 1145 BST on Thursday.

An ambulance spokeswoman said two crews were at the scene.

A specialist operations team was also on its way.

Two RAF air crew have been killed after a Tornado jet crashed during a training flight in Argyll. The plane came down on a hillside near the Rest and Be Thankful beauty spot in Glen Kinglass, near Arrochar, at about 1145 BST.

I work just along the road from the crash site, made for a hell of a detour on the way home.

alot of the eye witness accounts are nonsense though, especially when they talk about the planes rarely flying so low, or that they are only "fairly" regular around these parts.

it's nearly a daily occurance to see fast jets around Loch Long and Loch Fyne, nice and low, yesterday it was Hawks, they doubled back and seemed to come in even closer for a nosey at the house we're building.
today it was tornados.

Firstly condolences to the families and friends of the two airmen who lost their lives.
It goes to show that even in our hi-tech age, weather is such a dangerous factor in flying, even with a bird as sturdy and well made as the Tornado.

two lives lost in training may be many more saved in combat.

The RAF has a tradition of very aggressive terrain masking low level flight, and it's risky stuff even in peacetime. They are acknowledged experts in low level tactics, and that does not come without a cost. Whatever happened probably happened way too quickly for them to eject.

Very sad for the aircrew killed and their families, it's a pity, but these guys know the risk they are taking, and died doing their duty.
