Here you can see things are starting to grow. Most prominent, is, of course, the zucchini on the lower left:

Grapes growing like crazy:

Corn taking off:

Cucumbers, oregano, nasturtium, chili peppers:

Compost bin I built out of scrap lumber left over from building the deck, and an old roll of chicken wire I had laying around. Some of the pieces of lumber were warped, but who cares? It was a free compost bin! I later added hardware to the handle and the lid:

Here is what the garden looked like at its height in mid-August:

Just about every inch that can be used, is being used.

And because in all of this, I still believe beauty is important, here are a couple of vignettes:

I have learned a lot, a few crops failed, and next year there are a few things I plan to do differently. But overall it has been a smashing success!

Great looking gardens! We've got 3 raised beds and a "coldframe" for extending the season on both ends. Plus some potted tomatoes, peppers, etc. I don't have pictures of everything.

As an update.

My 1KW windmill has turned out to be soemwhat of a waste of money.

It turns out that all (most of) the promises made by the supplier, were wrong.

Even with a 24 volt 280 AmpHours batteri bank I do not have enough power to run my freezer on a constant basis. Reason: Not enough wind to keep the batteries topped up.

NOT ONLY THAT.
The inverter has a cut-out that disconnects if there is a power surge, which is precisely what a frezzer does when the compressor starts up.

However - the lights and similar at-the-moment-power consumption works fine.

But I could run my light for an awful lot of hours for the price of a windmill, batteri bank, controllers, inverter etc.

Ah well - another experience under the belt.

Hey the windtronics design only needs 2 mph -- it's got no turbine and derives the velocity power from the rim instead of the hub, using magnets:

Bay Leaves

This is my first year growing Bay Leaves. I know they can be used for cooking, but haven't tried them yet. The plant is doing fantastic so far, even though somethings been nibbling on the bottom leaves (probably the bunnies). Apparently Bay Leaves go great with Mediterranean Cuisine. I'll experiment with them when the plant gets a little larger.

Good show! Nice work!

Where'd you find that bay leaf plants? I haven't found seeds or seedlings etc anywhere.

You need bay leaves to make GUMBO!

Since this is a show off thread, you might like my urban garden:

I love those baby bunnies. What ended up happening with them?

I live in tiny apartment with cats that would get into any plants, so I don't have a garden right now. Maybe later though.
