Half a ton, approximately 1100 pounds of ammonium nitrate fertilizer was stolen over the Easter weekend from the French port of Honfleur. French officials are focusing their investigation on the Spanish Basque separatist group ETA as the culprit of the theft. Ammonium Nitrate is a common fertilizer but it has been used in many terrorist bombings and is a key ingredient for powerful bombs.

Half-Ton of Fertilizer Stolen From French Port
"The bag of fertilizer was stocked without surveillance on a quay of the port," said an official at the Honfleur port office, who asked not to be identified.
Ammonium nitrate is a common fertilizer but has been used in major terror attacks, including bombings on the resort island of Bali in 2002 and in Oklahoma City in 1995.
ETA's campaign of bombings and shootings has claimed more than 800 lives over several decades. The group seeks an independent Basque homeland in territory straddling northern Spain and southwest France.

So far, with all the thefts reported and other items that have turned up missing all around the globe. One has to wonder whether we're going to be looking at a massive, broad coordinated attack around the world.

It is disconcerting though that it takes so long to figure out that things have been stolen.
