60,000 inmates sexually abused every year

www.365gay.com

(Washington) A federal commission on prison rape has concluded that the risk of being attacked depends greatly on the type of prisoner, and where the inmate is locked up.

More than 60,000 inmates are sexually abused every year,

Based on a 2007 survey of tens of thousands of incarcerated people, 4.5 percent of those surveyed reported being sexually abused in the previous 12 months - and more prisoners claimed abuse by staff than by other inmates.

So they are going to do something about it?
wow.... took them long enough!

And of course the number in reality must be way higher than this!

What are your thoughts on this ATS, is this really that hard to monitor/prevent?

I'm sure 60,000 should actually be doubled, isn't that too much?

I sincerely doubt its too difficult to do anything.

Yeah, It's a real serious issue. For a lot of people, getting jail time is essentially getting sentenced to rape. Truly sickening.

Don’t do the crime if you can’t handle the time.
Yes rape is wrong on so many levels but these people are criminals. They deserve everything they get. Getting raped in prison is a great deterrent.

Go ahead and flame me I don’t care. I’m entitled to my opinion.

ATS allows threads of the same topic to be posted on both a regular board and the breaking news boards.

It is a scary thing considering a lot of inmates are in prison for small crime rehabilitation, and acts of sexual abuse harm the process.

Did you know that rape is rape?
That's like condemimg women to rape by men.

Yes because rape is rape.

One day when you might rise up against tptb you might end up in jail too.
For protesting!

Will that still hold true?

Disgusting!

Good thread, yes it is a major issue and needed to be dealt with yesterday. A lot of inmates are in prison for small crimes that still carry penitentiary time. Example would be people in there for small forgery, check fraud, felony possession of marjiuana, violation of probation/parole etc.. They do not deserve to be worried about getting raped by another guy while they are doing hard time already.

Rape is a particuarly personal crime, damaging to the victim on so many levels. It should never be considered to be a reason for criminals to not go to jail, those same criminals would not abide by this, does anyone really think that a robber stops to think first what the repurcussions of his crime could be? No, they don't. But they do know that rape is a risk inside any jail or prison, and do the crime anyway.
It is going to happen because there are rapists in prison.
The answer is separating the rapists, murderers and child abusers from the rest of the criminals. Then rapists will only be raping those who should most likely live their lives in living hell already.

What if you or a loved one ended up in prison for a crime you didn't commit? Or for protesting or being 'subversive'? I doubt you would think the same way when you have two 250+ pound dudes corning you in the shower while the guards look the other way.

What about the people that are incarcerated for simple drug possession?

Judge throws them in the can for a couple years citing they can get rehabilitated in prison, never mind doing hard time being taken away from there loved ones, etc, then the poor soul is repeated raped, beat, attacked. How's that for rehabilitation? They will probably be 10 times more messed up when they get out.

I think if the ptb are after your life, and they get you locked up, you will get raped.

The police and ptb are criminals period.

Well cry me a river.

The other option is upon entering prison, whacking off their talleywhackers.

Sure cut down on repeat rapes once they get out.

Please continue all discussion in the current ongoing thread:

Although the above posters are correct in that we allow the same topic to be posted in both BAN and one additional forum, the original thread on this topic was actually started in this forum but moved due to the subject not fitting BAN forum requirements of alternative angles.

Thank You. Thread closed.
