Hydrogen + oxygen = blastoff!
"For Spudis, rocket propellant is the most enticing product to make and sell on the moon. Propellant is a combination of liquid oxygen and liquid
hydrogen. Both oxygen and hydrogen are on the moon in known quantities, and scientists know how to extract them for use as propellant, according to
Spudis. "If you had a source of cheap propellant available for purchase in space that completely changes the way we approach spaceflight," he
says. The moon could serve as a filling station for space-based fuel trucks that fly around servicing communications satellites, or spaceships en
route to Mars. NASA's Lunar Prospector probe, shown here, detected large hydrogen deposits at the moon's poles in 1999."
