ACLU sues over 'secretly created' fed prison unit

The American Civil Liberties Union sued the government Thursday over the creation of a special unit at the federal prison in Terre Haute, claiming it was created in secrecy and keeps mostly Muslim prisoners in stark isolation.

The ACLU says about 40 other prisoners, mostly Muslims, are being held in a "secretly created" Communication Management Unit in which they have no contact with other prisoners, limited contact with the outside world and no physical contact with family members.

When inmates are isolated for so long they develop psychological problem Prisons respond to disciplinary issues by segregating people. If a person has a psychotic disorder, that may be the worst thing to do with him, "Segregation is to prison kind of what jail is to your community, so you're going to expect more psychopathology "You can expect that probably 75 percent of them are going to be anti-social personality types, which means among other things that they're going to be impulsive, and impulsivity is a major risk factor for suicide."

Summary

Terre Haute is a Federal prison in Indiana currently under "lockdown", where prisoner rights are severely curtailed. The lockdown was started weeks ago when a prisoner and a guard were involved in a physical attack. The prisoner concerned was aprehended the day, yet the lockdown continues. At this point, there appears to be no valid reason for the lockdown, leading to plausible allegations by our source that the lockdown process is being abused to form a collective punishment.
