This has been in the pipeline for some time, it's not the first time I've heard of this. As far as I understand it they are going to fire a projectile into the moon, about the size of a washing machine, and then another craft will capute data of what is thrown out into the atmosphere.

Official story is that they want to test for water, although I'm not sure many on here will believe that! Either way, the launch is today so hold on to your hats, should be interesting to see what comes back!

""that's the official story?"" how could it be a cover for something else? You cannot kill aliens with ballistic projectiles. They are far too transdimensional.

Yes. If this is true I am absolutely horrified. NASA does not in any way own the moon. Are they taking that little US flag they planted up there decades ago, this seriously? This is way, way, beyond their rights.

We haven't damaged the earth enough? Now they are going to start scarring the moon?

There has got to be more to this story. What is the stated purpose. I wonder how other nations are going to feel about this? It's their moon, too. Not that NASA gives a rat's derriere what other nation's think.

OK. now i'm mad.

and sad.

Dude, they are not "blowing up the moon" like in that mr. show episode. the moon is soooooo big, dropping a "washing machine sized" object is no worse than all the asteroids that drop on the moon on a regular basis. the only difference is that they can control the time of impact to have their cameras ready.

I guess they'll be none too happy, that's if (a) they're up there and (b) we happen to be targeting the projectile in a place where they are located.

However, taking a non-conspiratorial view, if NASA are searching for water, it's a lot cheaper and less dangerous to fire something into the moon and collate the data via an orbiting vehicle than it is to try and send men back to the moon and drill?

EDIT - Typo.
