NEW YORK - Sarah Palin says she accepts David Letterman's apology for the joke about her daughter.

The Alaska governor, in a statement issued Tuesday, said the apology was accepted "on behalf of all young women, like my daughters, who hope men who `joke' about public displays of sexual exploitation of girls will soon evolve."

This is simply earthshaking news. Now we can sleep easy once again knowing that
we don't have to concern ourselves with bad jokes and thinskined moms at least until someone else decides to ridicule a fool that has stepped into the national spotlight.

At least it was an amusing diversion from war and ensuing poverty for a little while.

I wouldn't really call it earthshaking personally. The joke didn't have much affect on me... I did find it in bad taste but hey you can't help what people say about you if that's what they think. It's their opinion.

On a side note I am glad Palin accepted the apology. I'm sure she could have convinced Cheney to go hunting with Letterman in Alaska...

Wow. I can't believe this is news. Letterman is a delightfully cynical comic who has lampooned both sides of the aisle- and there's no way he would have referred to the 14-year old child of Gov. Palin's. Was it a crude joke? Sure- but that's COMEDY. Was it worth of the BS involved in the apology? Nope. He apolopgized the night after it happened. Sarah just wanted a chance to get on Matt Lauer and be seen. She is far more base in her behavior than Letterman could ever be.

I've heard Leno and others make jokes that were far more "insulting" to pols and celebs, and no one asked them to "recant". The only reason Dave did was because Embassy Suites- a division of the HILTON Hotels, threatened to pull their advertising from CBS.

So, the Hilton granddaughter can publish a pornography tape and it's all good, but Letteran jokes about Palin and he's on the chopping block?

The Politically Correct Police are starting to cause me physical illness.

No way in heck Dave was aware of- or would EVER make such a joke about a 14-year old. He was referring to the 18-year-old, who got pregnant (by a man over 18- isn't THAT statutory rape? If she was 17?).

I thought it was hilarious- and it was just so incredibly gracious of the Palins to "accept' the apology. Someone in that family had better do something soon or Sarah won't get a spot on the View, or have her name said 10,000 times on CBS........

Europeans on this site- how hard are you laughing at the Americans? I'm American by birth (couldn't help it) and I'm so embarrassed for this it's painful....

The laws depend on what state you are in when it happens. I don't feel like looking up Alaska's laws (assuming that's where the act took place) but I know in Louisiana, 17 is the legal age of consent but anything below that brought together with another person 15-18 matters differently.

I'm sure Palin can take a joke, hell she continues to roll with the punches comedians dish out when the jokes are strictly about her. In this case, the joke was about her daughter and it didn't fly well with Mama.
Considering what happens when daughters of lefties get dogged on, Letterman got off easy.

Whhops, dub post.

And another thing, wouldn't it be nice to have a leader that protects their country with as much fervor as they protect their children?
...or do you also think babies are a mistake and punishment?

The entire thing was rather preposterous. I mean, here the video showed Sara Palin clearly walking into the stands with Willow and yet Letterman wanted us to believe he meant Bristol? "Yea, sure, that's right...It was Bristol I was talking about..." However, I was surprised that Palin was so upset about it considering he is just a comic -- who cares? Man, he must have been chewed up one side and down the other for him to apologize. What I can't figure out is why A-Rod was quiet about the entire thing -- if I were him and someone accused me of rape, I would have talked to my lawyers. Hmmmm...could that be why Letterman apologized????

As far as I can see ... he's been heavy on one side these days.

His 'jokes' were against children. They were disgusting.

He's usually pretty good. This time he stepped in it.

So why's CBS letting Letterman get away with this but Imus .. who had a contract that required him to cause a stir on the airways ... gets fired for one remark even after his apology??

Seems strange.

Did he apologize though? If this is it:

I didn't hear "I'm sorry", he gave an explanation, not an apology. He made it funny as well. Palin was right to accept it as such though. Dave has a quicker wit and a drastically bigger soap box.

I haven't watched Dave in years. WAY too late for me. This episode reminded me of his comedy. Going to have to start taping him.

Funny how people ridicule Palin for standing up for her daughter. If the same joke had been made about one of Michelle Obama's daughters how many of you casting stones at Palin would be thinking that Michelle was a loser for demanding an apology?

Yeah. Thought so.

Oh grow up. Letterman has been doing this for years. His best stuff was during the Clinton administration. Mind you the Clinton's gave him a LOT to work with.

Immature? Maybe a little. You know I'm right, though. People take pot-shots at Palin because they regard her as a political or social punching bag.

That's the old apology.

Here is the new one from last night:

And yes...what he said was in horrible taste. If anyone said something like t hat about my daughter..I'd go after them as well.

Maybe Palin's complaint did serve a purpose then, and he will begin checking his jokes for factual accuracy before he reads them. After all, if it comes out of his mouth, he is responsible. And libel and slander are only a step away from poor taste.

Oh please, he's been doing this for longer than a lot of you have been alive. He's BBQ'd Reagan, H.W., ALL the Clintons, Dubya and you can be assured when he has that ammo he's going to do Obama as well. Too soon though.

This is the new age though where thin skinned people complain about a joke. Where were the complaints and apologies over the tens of thousands of jokes he's told about all of the above?

Secondly, this crowd here at ATS is so big on 1st Amendment rights but this barks their onion and that goes out the window. Seriously folks you've gotta lighten up. He's a comedian.

No, no lighten up. Sarah Palin is a mongoose spit-fire that pukes blood that is partially lava over large American cities. And although she has forgiven, this will never be forgiven. To blood-fire hell with Dave and Paul and the audience that laughed at Dave wanting a 14 year-old to be sexually plundered by an adult male who is a whore himself! Palin's gargantuan wings will gently swath in the stratosphere cooling the nerves of demons everywhere who thirst vengeance! Vengeance! The liberal media will pay! And still be to blame!

As much as your post drips with sarcasm, I actually have no doubt that you, plucky, and others on here view Palin in that very kind of light. Just because the person being discussed is Sarah Palin. If it wasn't because it's her then it's because she's a Republican.

It's one of the cardinal rules of comedy: A full-grown male doesn't pick on little girls.
