"Credit Scores" are unfair, but hey, life isn't fair either, is it?
When I got divorced 14 years ago my ex was in no position to refinance our house (being an unemployed (by choice) housewife, but having a decent
inheritance), and I didn't wish to see her and my son forced out, so we contractually agreed in our divorce settlement that she would assume full
responsibility for the mortgage. My lawyer said at the time, "Wow, you're nice" when I insisted we handle it that way.
To make a long story short, I don't regret my decision at the time, but last year my ex defaulted on the mortgage and it went into foreclosure. My
name was on it and it affects my credit score, even though I have always made my own payments on time and keep my credit card bills paid in full every
month, and paid off my car loan 2 years ahead of time.
So my "actual" credit history is good, but my "Credit Score" is bad. Sucks, eh?
That's Life. Get over it. Frankly, I like paying off everything but my current mortgage every month and having a limited line of credit. There's a
lot to be said for living within one's means.
