Need help with online map measurements/software.

I'm not sure i've titled this properly, but hopefully someone can help.

Is there such a thing on line, where you can view a map of an area, trace where you've travelled and then find an exact distance of that route?

I do a fair bit of walking with my kids, and i want to see a map of my local area (i like in the UK), and would like to be able to use a tool on that map to draw our route, and get an exact distance. I want to set them some little goals as far as distance is concerned.

Is there anything about that can do that? Can it be done on Google Earth?

Thanks for any advice on this, the answer is probably so simple, but i'm stuck.
