Twenty five people, described as Islamic militants, have been detained by Turkish officials in the Bursa province. They are accused of plotting to bomb the NATO summit in Istanbul next month, which will be attended by President George Bush.

Guardian.co.uk

Police confiscated guns, explosives, bomb-making equipment, and more than 4,000 CDs containing training and instruction from Osama bin Laden.

The suspects are believed to be affiliated with Al Qaeda and are a part of the Ansar al-Islam group. They planned to flee to Iraq if the bombing was successfully carried out.

The summit, taking place on June 27 and 28, marks the formal induction of Romania, Bulgaria, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Slovenia and Slovakia into NATO.

This would be a priceless target for Al Qaeda. Turkey is something the radical Islamists hate. It is an Islamic country that also happens to have a secular democratic form of government. I think it's also fair to say that overall, the standard of living for Turks is higher than that of other Islamic countries. One last point, Turkey maintains relations with both the US and Israel.
