...i have heard christian parents say, their kids would be better off dead then gay...

To give you an idea of how real these convictions are... when a good friend of mine's partner came out to his parents, they held a mock funeral in his name. Rented a funeral home with empty casket, ordered flowers and invited the whole family and their friends. When he tried to talk to his parents afterwards they treated him like a stranger and said they never had a son. Such ruthless actions are clearly a symptom of cult mentality and group think.

No wonder gays have such a high suicidal and addiction rate, our society is toxic/sick.

I feel so bad for these children..they are but innocent mouthpieces for their parents. I can only imagine the embarrassment they must endure before the dogma actually takes hold of their minds..kind of a vicious cycle.

Just in case you haven't seen the documentary or anyone else here... Jesus Camp puts this molding of young minds in proper perspective.

Here are some highlights from the film:

It's kind of ironic that so called Christians are suing for the right to be bigoted, hateful and prejudiced... then again... maybe it's not ironic at all.. more par for the course! It's articles like this that make me feel so happy to be agnostic.

IRM

I so agree, it's articles like this that makes me thank God I'm an atheist.

With each passing day it is becoming more obvious that religion is a mental illness. Maybe it's time to try to help these people? I feel sorry for them and pretty soon they will be shooting teachers who mention evolution or bombing stores that sell 'gay' books, etc. The sick part is that the moderate christians stand by doing nothing about it... this is because deep down they approve of this extremist behavior.. to the moderate christians the extremists do their 'dirty work' for them and make life easier. Why can't people wake up, it is tragic beyond comprehension.

Wow this certainly hearkens back to what 1989 in South Carolina. I watched many a book, art, album, cd, porn, other religious books, burn in the fiery pits of a dumpster of our local church. I thought it was silly then, and even more silly now. What can I say though? I got a deep respect for death metal from a few cds I stashed and still 6 or 7 of us ended up gay despite those efforts to squash the outside world.

Let them burn it, people will be more aware of the book that way and this is how it always turns out. For every book they burn I pledge to buy 5 and put in the library here.

I saw the post above accusing gays of wanting approval from Christians. Honestly I don't give a rats behind what Christians think nor care about their approval. My religious beliefs say it is ok to be gay and you sirs and madams are hindering my religious beliefs. Of marriage and all that nonsense I will say it again to give me the opportunity to have the same rights as marriage as I do not even want the title as Marriage has a high failure rate and I would rather gays start with a clean slate and have something better.

It is unfortunate that a vocal minority always seem to tarnish the image of a moderate, peaceful majority, isn't it?

Recall the old anti-drug campaign "this is your brain on drugs" (with the eggs on the skillet analogy)? Well i have a theory/campaign that runs a parallel to this perspective...
i call it "Is this your brain on god?"

You actually touch on something very important. This is really where our focus needs to be at. The solution can't be found in putting out each individual fire. We need to go to the source of them all to fix them all for once and for all... then we can evolve. We have to take every opportunity available to sow seeds of reason in these people and steer potential converts away from their seductive grip. Think of them as drug-pushers/dealers... Dracula's christians... the more educated customers we have the less addicts the church can claim.

...and as Neo__'s sig, eloquently puts in summary "There is no Religion Higher than Truth"

What I find to be the issue of threads like this, is the need for those who refuse to believe in God, not only to insist there is no God, but to insist that Christians need to accept beliefs contrary to what they are certain is sin and sinful acts.

The only thing I insist that Christians in the USA accept is that they are not the authority of society... they participate in a secular society.

If they don't want to be homosexual because of their beliefs, then that is all great and dandy.

The moment they point a finger and say "Those people shouldn't do that because I think it is sinful", they are well within their 1st amendment rights, but are forgetting that no one gives a damn.

Chrisitians must accept that to live in America means that you cannot dictate what you feel others should do. There is just no amendment which gives any religion preference when it comes to a free society.

Your religious beliefs are allowed to be yours... that's it...

See here is the issue... really it's not. True religion, which is not an academic thing that can somehow be separated from a culture of ethnicity makes a lot of sense. Every tribe has a religion of some sort... The Celts had relgions, the sumerians had religions, the romans had their religion, the jews have their religion, and one major off shoot, and then you get the idea...

In each of these situations, GOD or Gods or Goddesses were created from a cultural identity that members could identify with, and that represented them in whatever struggle they fought against...

In this situation, it wasn't a mental illness as much as a raison d'etre..

Then post-tribal civilizations get a hold of Gods, and they become used as a center of political power. Temples are set up in which secret technology is used to cause "miraculous" occurrences, and keep the faithful coming back to make donations...

In the pre-modern and modern world, entire sets of civilizations identified with a God of sorts for moral superiority AND political power as they fought against other civilizations... you have Islam vs Christendom during the crusades... Catholicisms role vs Communism, etc..

And finally in the post-modern world, there is so since of tribal identification. You don't live and breathe amongst people who carry the same traits as you and view the world through the same lens. You search for a sense of common unity, and many find it through these abstract religions which ask you to believe in myths from tribes you don't even belong to. And if you don't... well then you just are lost...

The point is... that Religion has had sooo many faces.... Keep in mind that during the height of the Druidic times, the Druids were priests, teachers, judges, apothecaries, etc... but by time St Patrick came around, Druids were nothing more than 2 bit soothsayers...

The same is true of believers in Christianity and Islam.... Many people who follow / practice these are sooo far away from those who used to, that they are hilarious caricatures of those who came before.

It's not a mental illness... just a withering and vestigal belief system... the Gods are always diminished over time...

Look at the Celtic God Lugh.... now, we know this powerful master of all arts simply as the Leprechaun....

Soon Jesus & Mohammed will be lost to the cartoonish ethnic identifiers of a bygone era; hardly recognizable... much like they are now...

Who was it again that (re)said, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."?

Oh, was it that Jesus fellow? Clearly Jesus demands a public Bible burning.

I am against book burning, but the story here is being twisted.

It doesn't seem like they want to ban the book due to homosexuality. They want it gone because of the hate crime aspect. They're trying to prevent someone from getting hurt, which is a very Christian thing.

Obviously this lawsuit is a crap-shoot and is likely to go no where... simply an attempt to terrorize/bully writers of this genre niche and push their narrow-minded values. As a publicity stunt i can only see this backfiring, sales of this book are likely to increase as a result

here is why i disagree

i think the people seeking to "burn" the book, are the PUBLISHERS LOL

they want this crappy book to sell, so how else can they hype it up?

of course, by creating a scene around it
ta-da , book sales skyrocketing

i can tell business when i see it
they clearly are making money from the book they claim to despise

Why did God destroy Sodom and Gomorrah? What kind of people are alive now?

Man should be with woman as is the law of nature, but above all God.

I am glad you are here on ATS. ATS motto is "deny ignorance". Your post reek of ignorance. It stinks.

Sodom and Gomorrah were not destroyed because of homosexuality.

Homosexuality is a part of the law of nature. Take a look around.

You are here because you want your ignorance destroyed. You want to understand.

I congratulate you on your bravery to come here.

By the way, Sodom and Gomorrah were wicked cities regardless of homosexuality, though homosexuality was probably one of those reasons. I'm referring to all nations in my first post. I'm not biased, I just know who the God who claims He is the only God is. In fact I know Him personally. That's a story for a few years down the road. You'll know exactly what I mean when that time comes and you're going to hate me for it.

I do not know whether to weep at your post or laugh at it?

Do some reading of the Bible and some research and you'll be surprised.

I am all for freedom of speech of course, but there are times when I really want to burn books on Christian propaganda. There are millions of Christian propaganda books I really want to burn, but then again, I would be a hypocrite myself.

Just please do some research. It will do you a world of good. Like I said, I think you came here to get your ignorance destroyed.

Just because someone calls themselves christian, or with God doesn't indicate they are with God...

I could ruin ruin any of your lives by just doing the following...

Here is how:

First get into the group claiming I'm that group, with it, etc..... or create such, and such group ie: a copy....
Next Get accepted, up my status as a good person...
Then after which go all out, say something or doing something evil, bigoted, racist, murder, etc.......
Get my buddies to say crap about the evils of ALL the group...
People claim ALL of that group is Evil based on one person's action...
Go back to my real Evil group - Clap hands with the buddies on a job well done on destroying yet another specific type of people/group...., and so forth, etc..,etc...,etc...

..........

The truth is that A lot of the people who claim to Be with God would KILL/MURDER Jesus Christ if He were to show up today.... That is why they are NO different than the so-called evil they want destroyed as both are on the same side....

Why? Christ didn't free the slaves by stealing them from their owners, Christ didn't stop the Child Sacrifices bv running up to them, and taking the children away, Christ didn't run up to, burn, and destroy anything the Romans Did/Had, He didn't run up to a homo having sex, and pull them apart yelling at them..

Christ did tho - went to, told - then left.. He also invited anyone to come, and listen to him, but told them to keep any practices He didn't enjoy somewhere else... in other words - in my house you play by rules, etc...

Yes Christ Today again would be murdered by these so-called Men of God....

Looks like the Christians have hit a new low. How can the followers of this religion expect to not being mocked if the religion harbors such ignorant followers is beyond my comprehension.

Burning books? Seriously? This is the year 2009, and these people still participate in activities of the dark ages. Appalling, simply appalling.

It doesn't even need to be pointed out that those fools had no reason reading in the first place. And if they really had to and despised it so much they could very well burn it in their own backyard without having to expose the public with their hatred.

Some Christians are such hypocrites. The religion supposedly preaches about love but the followers seem to manage to constantly find a new thing to hate every so often.
