Mysterious Inscribed Slate Discovered at Jamestown

Archaeologists in Jamestown, Virginia, have discovered a rare inscribed slate tablet dating back some 400 years, to the early days of America's first permanent English settlement

The scratched and worn 5-by-8-inch (13-by-20-centimeter) tablet is inscribed with the words "A MINON OF THE FINEST SORTE." Above the words are the letters and numbers "EL NEV FSH HTLBMS 508," interspersed with symbols that have yet to be interpreted.

Didn't school kids used to have these before there were large wall blackboards in schools?

The article says it was discarded down a well.

I wouldn't read ANYTHING into this.

"Filet mignon of finest sorte" [minon] , the local village inn owner couldn't spell properly and the word is of french origin so, perhaps that explains it ?

More likely to have been a misspelling of minion - A loyal servant of another, usually more powerful being; A sycophantic follower - given that a picture of a man is on the piece of slate.

It looks like that hieroglyph that Obama thought looked like him. See the ears?

I'm part Indian so let me interpret. It was the country's first billboard and says, "Thank you for coming and hope you enjoyed your visit. Now go home."

An interesting find, wells and privies can be treasure troves for archeologists, as they were often used as general trash pits, particularly privies. If it dates from the Starving Time, as noted, it would be all the more interesting.
