Twenty-two-year-old Ben Powless is working alongside Peru's national organisation of Amazon Indigenous people, AIDESEP, and fears more lives will be lost, with the government now labelling protesters as "terrorists". Many Peruvians - not just Indigenous - are upset by plans to open land in Peru's Amazon region to oil, gas and mineral exploration, even though much of the land is officially protected.
The Government has recently signed a number of free trade agreements with the United States and Canada, seeking to change domestic laws and encourage foreign investment in the Amazon.

This is a continuing tragedy, and I hope the world pays notice and shows their support for these beautiful indigenous people.

It's a tragedy that has been going on from the dawn of time... again and again indigenous peoples are conquered by invading peoples...
This is not new, and is part and parcel of the human condition...
The Sumerians did it, the Egyptians did it, The Hebrews even did it for Christ sake...
Carthage did it, the Celts did it... Rome did it... and they really did it...
Native Americans were doing it long before any European set foot on this soil...
And now it's happening in the Amazon....
Yes, it's tragic... but its the same old tragedy that has been with us for millennia..
