China requires PCs to come with anti-porn software

www.deseretnews.com

BEIJING — China is requiring personal computers sold in the country to carry software that blocks online pornography and other Web sites, potentially giving one of the world's most sophisticated censorship regimes even more control over the Internet.

The software's developer said Monday the tool would give parents more oversight by preventing computers from accessing sites with pornographic pictures or language. Jinhui Computer System Engineering Co., which won a government contract to develop the "Green Dam-Youth Escort" filtering software, was compiling a database of sites to block.

Oh this is too good to be true, what better way to test a new system than to throw into the most populated nation of the world. Eventually all manufactured pc will have pre blocked algorithms depending on which nation wants to block what site from its citizens.

Good to see how this is going, gives a heads up display on future plans and naturally creating more jobs for the programmers who often seek venture capital to kick start new software companies.

Who ever said that capitalism is non existent in China..!

All algorithms can be broken and gotten around.
Every time they try and force something like this someone just undoes it.
They need to learn to stop trying to force.

WOW That is very sad.....Not that I would promote porn, but it should be by choice!
Once they get one thing on a ban list.where will it end?
If it is your childeren you want to protect and you are not able to set the restrictions, and filters then they should not be on your PC without supervision!
Or just keep letting your 40" big screen babysitter keep tabs on them.

"tool would give parents more oversight by preventing computers from accessing sites with pornographic pictures or language. '

BULLCRAP, "concerned" parents can allow access to trusted sites today. They don't need computers with the socalled built-in ability to do this.

This has NOTHING to do with the parents in China, and quite possibly has NOTHING to do with Porn.

It's nothing more than a test bed for internet control and censorship.

I have a big screeen myself, nothing wrong with it....
It is the parents that set their kids in front of it with 250 channels and DVR, that keeps kids in front of it from the time the get out of school until they fall asleep in front of it!
That upsets me, many of those parents actually tell you that they go to the store, and many other things, because they know their childeren will not leave the television, and if they do try to get them off it they throw a fit!

Several replies and no one has pointed out that it claims to be for porn. Then they just slowly start adding any site that they feel has information that goes against what they deem acceptable.

Not like censorship is anything new in communist china or anything, but come on.

If they did stop trying to restrict unwanted people from entering restricted areas, think of how bad the internet would be.

Their kids, their buisness.

Who knows, maybe one day one of those kids will be on a gameshow and become the next Ken Jennings.

Exactly my point, what better way to test its beta stage on a nation known for its cyber methods.

That is why China is the way it is. They are the testing ground for a future world government. I believe most of what we see going on in China is how it will be worldwide when a world government is established.

China is very much a capitalistic nation. People who simply label them as communists either do not know China's politics or do not know the definition of communism.

China uses a totalitarian form of government, but bases their economic policies on capitalism. The only difference between capitalism in the United States and capitalism in China is the people of China do not have the economic freedom we do.

The citizens of China are lucky they are even allowed Internet. Them doing something like this just does not suprise me. Soon They will only have one web page that isn't blocked and that will be filtered news.

Like I said, they are lucky to even get internet.

I bet in 10 years we will still enjoy our Internet as we have it today. If not I will skydive into the middle of an outside sporting event of your choice naked.

So I'm not to worried about us having a sensored internet.

A government would have more luck in trying to convince the public porn is bad.
I mean really.

Stop porn on the internet?
Are you freaking kidding me?

All true and well, but if you were to ask a friend at any given time the following, "do you think china has technological or internet technology far exceeding over 70% of the world" , you would be surprised to see that almost all will answer you "No".

It is the image portrait of the citizens of China who live is some village growing pigs and animals that most people have been subjected to. It will be way too late to do the slightest difference when one day everyone wakes up to find the "Made in China" label on all goods.

It is also a a well known fact that a similar silicon valley already exists in china with the giants who revolve around internet or communications are based in China. With a surplus of worker and people who have studied abroad, then were sent back home to manage these giants are Chinese by birth right. This is what most people are ignorant in understanding let alone comprehend the impact this is having and will have for future generations.

That's the great thing about China, they don't have to convince the citizens of anything.

There using the porn as a scapegoat in order to make the internent controllable for them..

I can undertand having parental controll and stopping minors from porn and Im for that.
But this really isnt the case there in China...

They allow the sex slave trade with North korea but dont like porn.
geewizzz

The higher ups who make these laws are probly sexual deviants when they pull their shades and lock their doors and are the ones busted in sex scandles you see on the news from time to time...

Well, if someone filmed you doing it and put it on the internet, you can feel a little better knowing that a billion or so Chinese won't see it!

Porn should be mandatory for the internet... sheessshhh... get over it, China, we've all got a set and want to use it!
