School Board Considers Ban on Pics, Video on Campus

wokv.com

The Duval County School board will consider banning students from taking pictures and videos while on campus.

The proposed change in the student code of conduct comes after a video allegedly showing a teacher choking a student was turned in to administrators.

The school district says teacher Michael Brown has been removed from the classroom at Forrest High, but it's still investigating the charge.

If the district approves the change tonight, students will not be able to take those videos or photographs without the permission from school administrators and the people in the photos.

So rather than fix the problem, their solution is to keep word from getting out.

The rational was that students could use the cameras to cheat on exams. (My thoughts on as a school employee are :eyes:.)

The penalty for use of a camera in school is up to two days suspension.

Most teachers ignore the School Board's ruling on cell and cameras. The most they do is confiscate the camera or cell phone until the end of the day. The more likely scenario is that the student will be told to turn it off and put it away.

If a dean catches a student, however, the student can be sure the item will be confiscated at least for the day, depending on the individual and the school.

maybe this school board needs to get fired?

i personally think so, the Constitution does not end on a school grounds
in fact it is very present and should be observed at all times

of course, common decency is expected from all parties, but having cameras keeps EVERYONE in line IMO

Exactly the correct mindset. Right now the only less than lethal weapon we have to use against police is public outrage caused by video.

Hmm. What happens if you're studying photography or video art at school? Pretty much every high school art curriculum involves photography at some point.

honestly, it doesn't really bother me. When I was in high school, we were not allowed to have any electronic device out of our purse or backpack in school due to it being a possible distraction. We even had to hand in our TI-83's weekly to make sure we had not installed any games on them.

I don't believe suspension is in order, but keep it out of sight in the classroom. Unless you see a teacher strangling a student...then bust it out and document away.

It seems like a simple compromise to me. You can keep it on your person, but leave it hidden unless you have permission to use it, or witness something where photo or video documentation will benefit the parties involved.

There are good reasons why they want to ban photos/video on campus including the whole "sexting" kiddie porn scandal at several schools in Florida, but this is a good argument for keeping them. Florida has MAJOR problems with teacher-on-student violence and sex offenses, much more so than any other state I have heard of. There've been several arrests just in the past six months for assaults, sex crimes and other crimes including a special ed teacher who duct taped an ADD student to a chair and taped his mouth closed. LOTS of complaints against those teachers across the state and they never seem to get resolved. There also have been several incidents in the past few months where kids have texted each other about afterschool fights and they have turned into serious brawls with dozens of kids, a bunch of teens were arrested last month in Leesburg for that and they are all facing adult criminal charges.

They should stimulate the economy by hiring someone to monitor closed circuit tv on campuses, it would solve some of these problems since teachers would be held accountable.

agreed! Maybe that's really why they want them out. I watched an episode of Dr. Phil a few weeks back where the issue was child abuse in schools. One family only found out their child was being verbally and psychologically abused by his teacher because they hid a tape recorder in his cargo pants pocket. There was also disturbing footage of a girl being sent to "Time out" for 3 hours or something, but this was recorded BY the SCHOOL and they were "proud" of their discipline system.

really makes you wonder whether it's the kids or teachers who are worse.

par for the course for Duval County School Board, the chool board in Duval County is as corrupt as the JSO.

I had several fights abnd run-ins with this school board while my daughter was in school, finaly I had to take her out and since i worked nights at the time, I homeschooled her myself.

That's a simply disgusting idea, and unfortunately it could be possible. Banning cameras so teachers can get away with violence? Sickening!

maybe this is why the youth seem so uber-violent these days

perhaps because we Adults teach them "violence solves problems"

like when we get in a argument we threaten each other and then it can become physical combat

kid wont shut up? choke em till he does

iraq wont comply? bomb them to pieces

terrorists threaten us? bomb another country

person on street argues with cop? they get tazed and beaten down

Kids are Violent Because WE TEACH THEM TO BE!!

Gee sir, you just hit the nail on the head. I wish people could grasp this amazingly hard concept.
