please, forgive my ignorance on this subject, as i haven't taken Biology in so long!

but, i always thought that Bacteriophages, specifically the T4 Bacteriophage, resemble something straight out of a Sci-Fi movie!

Artificial Nano “T4 Bacteriophage” Description: “T4 Bacteriophage” is a virus like the robot in the living body. Artificial nano “T4 Bacteriophage” was fabricated by FIB-CVD on Si surface. Size of the artificial nano “T4 Bacteriophage” is about ten times as large as the real virus. It is made of Diamond-like Carbon. It is likely to begin to walk in the nano space!! nevenera1.wordpress.com...

could it be at all possible that Bacteriophages, or even viruses for that matter, are all man-made? if so, is this nanotechnology itself in action?

if these can be made by man, then what else are they making right now? (for an idea, just search ATS using the word "nano"...)

if they have always been man-made, and i'm just ignorant and don't know this, someone please tell me that too!
i'm sure one of you can steer me straight!

i've just never really bothered to look into this subject, outside of being force-fed the curriculum in a classroom...

by the way, here are some very interesting articles on this subject:
"New Understanding of Complex Virus Nano-Machine for Cell Puncturing and DNA Delivery" (.gov website!)
"The Next Phage"
"Study reveals new information on how viruses enter cells"

Hi,
from my recall of my classes, even some of our white cells can be called 'bacteriophages', so i don't think it can be all 'nanotechnology'.

still.. . . . . from my recalll, i do not recall any 'bacteriophages' i studied in my courses, at least natural from an 'animal or human' source to have the appearance you have put in your post. those photos appear to be closer to the virus's and subviral particles i studied in micro and virology, if memory serves me correctly.

is there liklihood that this is being used for nanotechnology? makes sense. virus's are incredibly effecient, especially some of them, and with our capabilities, and the very miniscule bit i have heard about nanotechnology, the consideration seems like a real possibility.

tlc3

great photos. and diagrams.
still puts me in 'awe' of the 'life' that may be considered 'beyond' human or animal or plant existance, even on this planet.

I didnt know what bacteriophage are, the link gave me an insight into it.

well i originally wanted to do this thread about just viruses, but i kept coming across bacteriophages , and their appearance is gnarly!

...kinda look like some sorta "spider-bot"!

i remember seeing them in school, but i never bothered to research them outside of class...

No. The first virus was discovered towards the end of the nineteenth century, long before humans had nanotechnology (actually, we still don't have it, just the beginnings of it). Viruses are found all over Earth, even in places where humans can't go. A litre of sea water holds billions of them.

There is no possibility whatsoever that viruses are man-made nanotechnology. Origins of viruses

thanks for clearing that up! i've known that the natural world can be pretty marvelous and incredible on its own - i just never bothered to go out of my way to research the artificial-looking bacteriophages...

...also, the fake, man-made one pictured up top is 10X larger than the real virus, and was a model created in a lab that utilizes nanotechnology!
www.mansfield.ohio-state.edu...

i believe you're right in saying that nanotechnology is beginning, but i have a feeling they're more advanced than they lead on to be...

...they say our "government" has technology 40-70+ years more advanced than they let us know about...

but that's another thread

as a chick who has dated a crazy swiss microbiologist who personally worked on Bacteriophage P1 and others,
I am uniquely qualified to answer some of your questions, or at least lead you toward the answers.
I wrote lots of stuff this year and last about bacteriophages.

They are the HOLY GRAIL of biowarfare and bioengineering.
