LIMA, Peru ?— Protests by indigenous communities over oil drilling and mining in the Peruvian Amazon region turned violent Friday, leaving at least 13 people dead in clashes with police and subsequent rioting.

According to local officials, nine police and four Indians were killed in an early-morning confrontation on a road between Jaen and Bagua in northeast Peru and the protests that followed. The Bagua public defender's office said another 45 people were wounded.

What if this was to have happen in Alaska, how would you think the local authorities would have handled 13 deaths.

I for one would immediately think that a black ban on media until some form of story could be thrown together. I can only feel sorry and sad for these poor people, going up against billion dollar empires who consider a persons life equal to the cost of the bullet or the cost of the officers pay check per hour.

Naturally not a word of this will go beyond or make head way, let alone page 15 from any News Paper.
