All true, but can we expand it to our political situation?
Immigration is controversial, but, is there a common theme that pervades all the different opinions? Such as, only an example, but we know the
country was built on immigration, so no one denies the need for it in some fashion. We know that some menial jobs won't be filled any other way
(i.e. fruit picking, turkey plants, etc.) We know that "illegal immigration" is dangerous for National Defense and costly to our social programs.
SO: How do we lump the "common sense" arguments together and avoid the controversial aspects. Get away from the details of How? and get to
the meat of What? needs fixing.
1. Our borders must be secure at all costs seems like common sense. We don't want Al Qaeda or N. Korea marching across undetected, that seems a
universal truth, and I for one am appalled to know that we don't even have a complete fence up! I have a fence around my yard!
2. We also don't want to deport the millions of illegals that are propping up our construction and farming industries, supporting our economy and so
on.
3. We don't want non-citizens draining our social systems of assets meant for the citizens, and bankrupting states like California.
4. We don't want illegals working for lower wages and not paying taxes, it gives them an unfair advantage to American workers.
----> Ok, so my opinion on that one is kind of obvious.
There are many, many topics like this, and with a healthy (non-partisan, non-racial, non-politically correct) open, direct discussion. I believe the
intelligent people here could hammer out some core principles regarding all these issues.
Abortion is another good example. Nobody believes third trimester abortion for the sake of birth control is right or just. The murkiness comes from
what and when does the state decide, what and when does the woman decide, what and when does the doctor decide, etc. We don't have to know at what
point "life" begins, or address any religious issues, we can academically discuss the situation and hammer out the few ideals that nobody (at least
very few fringe idealists) dispute.
