It's the GM bankruptcy thing. We got a message about it. Nothing to see here folks...you know, other than our nation's industries falling one after the other.

Interesting. Why put an embargo on it until 10PM though? Why not make it tomorrow morning? Also, a lot of the news about the restructuring has already been made public, so what is there that is worth putting an embargo on?

This is what I think the announcement pertains to.

GM prepares for bankruptcy protection announcement

DETROIT – With the clock ticking on a June 1 government deadline to restructure, General Motors Corp. worked feverishly Sunday to shore up its global businesses to clear the way for a speedy reorganization in bankruptcy court. A majority of the Detroit automaker's unsecured bondholders announced they had accepted a deal viewed as crucial to reorganization, and Germany agreed to loan $2 billion to GM's German unit, Opel, as part of its acquisition by a Canadian auto parts supplier. The moves don't change much for GM, but shore it up for a bankruptcy protection filing, said Rebecca Lindland, an auto analyst for the consulting firm IHS Global Insight. "The more agreements GM has with its interests, the better the bankruptcy is going to go," she said. "It's not a game changer at all.

Why the embargo on the info if it is only the GM BK?

Who are they protecting? What are they protecting?

What will the market do?

This all seems surreal, anyone have a good explanation for a news embargo?

I have the Dow Jones Futures Contracts running real time on my computer screen, when this news drops I will post it in this thread and the market thread (the movement in futures contracts)

Look, as other posters have pointed out, if the announcement was anything of significance Obama would be making an address from the oval office. Also, these embargoed items are usually business related.

When they say 10pm that's eastern time, correct? As in, only an hour away?

I talked to my father briefly about an embargo. He said it's rarely used, and it's usually something as monumental as the president getting shot...

I really hope we're not starting ww3 or anything else absurd...

Yup, 10 PM eastern.

I wonder what it's about. I don't think it's about GM, though, because most of that information has already been released. They're also giving a statement about GM tomorrow, not today.

Thanks....

I like reading this type of news here with comments much better than ticker taping.

I also have a knot forming in the pit of me belly.
Will look for the numbers.

Peace...

Probably nothing.

They embargoed photos and video of a Memorial Day Tribute recently until the next morning. So, just "embargo-ing" something doesn't mean it's earth shattering.

Memorial Day Tribute

As others here have posted, an Embargo serves advanced notice to news organizations of a forthcoming story/announcement with the understanding that the news not be released until the appointed time.

In the case of business related news, it could be because a sensitive negotiation is underway and a news leak could put the expected agreement in jeopardy.

Just speculating but that would be a potential explanation.

GM popping up on Denninger's place also - looks the likely issue at the moment.

Mr. Koch, a managing director at the advisory firm AlixPartners LLP, will be named to the post when GM files its bankruptcy papers at 8 a.m. Monday at the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New York's Southern District, these people said. He will be the highest-ranking outsider in GM's officer ranks and oversee about 60 Alix employees working for the auto maker.

This will have a knock-on affect to their huge supply chain, which may see bankruptcy also! Unemployment figures will not be on the White House's agenda tonight! Don't mention their bailout either!

Thanks for the clarification, though I do wonder why advise the media only to tell them not to release until said time?

Could be to give them time to put together some front page headline articles?

Hmmmm.... Oh well thanks for the help and thanks to all for the updates
