Hi, i'm not new here but i'm mostly a reader rather then a writer. I recently read a topic about monsters in peoples local areas, and I thought it would be interesting if people could add mysteries of any real catergory to this topic about their local areas. I'll start with my home town of Crewe, Cheshire, England.

The Time Capsule

This is the first i've heard of this because I had moved to Perth before the Brittania statue in the middle of the town square was moved, but apparently when the statue was erected 81 years ago they buried a time capsule underneath it. Not so much as a mystery but more of trivia no one knows whether the capsule even existed, the fact the statue was moved in 2006 without anyone really finding anything raises doubts, but if the box did exist is it still buried underneath where the statue once was? Was it moved for some reason? And if it didn't exist then it can easilly be said the pensioner who states it did exist is going senile, or just made a visual mistake.

Wilmot, 88, of Broughton Road, grew up in Market Square and was seven when the Britannia statue was erected.
The statue has now been controversially lifted from Market Square to be renovated and then placed at the Municipal Square.

Wilmot claims a small steel box containing coins and other memorabilia was placed into a shallow well just before the memorial was put in place to the delight of 15,000 onlookers on June 17, 1924.

I don't really know of anything from area, but I think this has the potential to be a very interesting thread! Glad you started it

There was a supposed UFO crash across the river over in Cape Girardeau, Mo. (USA) back in the 40's. Pre-dates Roswell. I think it was on a preachers land and there was allegedly a photo taken of him with one of the aliens...I am sure there are threads here about it.

Great idea for a thread! I'm from San Antonio, Texas where Whitley Streiber was abducted. As a matter of fact I have spent some time very close to where he claims we went to the "secret school".

You want a good one? Here it goes:

When I went to primary school all the kids used to talk about "Purple Aki". A man who was purple who was basically a menace to young kids and would go around getting kids and teenagers to show him their muscles.

One myth had him chasing a kid in the 1980's trying to feel his muscles, when the kid ran onto a railway platform and fell off. Some say he jumped off in sheer terror at Aki. Another myth was where Aki cornered a young teen and made him do pushups with Aki sitting on his back.

Want to know the scary part??

Mr Purple Aki is infact Akinwale Arobieke.

IT'S ALL REAL. What did you think I was lying!?........

..... Now show me them muscles.......

Heres another mystery, this time from Haslington which is the village where I grew up and right next to Crewe.

The Hawk Inn

At the local pub known as the Hawk Inn, which is also haunted by the way by the woman in grey I believe, the notorious highwayman Dick Turpin was once supposed to have stayed there, this is only a rumour then a mystery but it is fairly interesting because of it really is a link to Northern English past.

The ghost, the woman in gray is supposed to haunt the building, apparently the basement level. My friends mum used to work there (i assume she still does, i left haslington a long time ago) and reported finding blood on the kitchen door knob that just wouldn't disapear. I'm going to look for more sories about this ghost and if I find them I will post them here.

Crewe Golf Course

I know this one from personal experience as well as rumour but aparently green men have been seen in the golf course, I myself have seen one though I could have been mistaken, there isn't much about this rumour but I'll look out for any news.

If I find anymore stories I will post, also, if anyone has any mysteries from perth WA (where I live now) that would be interesting because it's very ahrd fidning mysteries in a modern city.

i live in portadown - n.ireland and over 450 yrs ago 300 protestants consisting primarily of English women, children, and old people were driven out of their homes in the town and marched towards the river. On the way, they were robbed and stripped of most or all of their clothes. At the River Bann, they were forced to crowd onto an unsteady wooden bridge. The rebels then set fire to both ends of the bridge. Many of the English who tried to jump in the river drowned or died of exposure. (This was mid-November in a particularly cold winter); those who tried to swim to shore were assaulted by rebels standing on the banks with long pikes who drove them back into the cold river where they died.

For months after this there were a variety of spiritual phenomena in the area (these stories are preserved in a large group of witness statements taken in Dublin in 1642 and 1643). Some English reported that the river ran red like blood for weeks after the massacre and that there was a massive fish kill in a river that usually teemed with salmon. The most often repeated story, however, is of ghostly apparitions. One of these states that rebels posted to guard the banks of the River Bann would see heads floating on the water, often crying or moaning; when the guards tried to fish them out or stab them with their pikes, they would dematerialize. The most frightening incidents involved appearances of an English woman dressed in rags and often holding a baby who materialized above the former location of the Portadown bridge. Sometimes she simply appeared to be crying over the dead.. i cross over the new bridge built on the orginal spot daily..

Here we have the very famous Yee Naaldlooshii or what the rest of the world calls a skinwalker...

Possibly the best documented skinwalker beliefs are those relating to the Navajo yee naaldlooshii (literally "with it, he goes on all fours" in the Navajo language). A yee naaldlooshii is one of several varieties of Navajo witch (specifically an ’ánt’įįhnii or practitioner of the Witchery Way, as opposed to a user of curse-objects (’adagąsh) or a practitioner of Frenzy Way (’azhįtee)). Technically, the term refers to an ’ánt’įįhnii who is using his (rarely her) powers to travel in animal form. In some versions men or women who have attained the highest level of priesthood then commit the act of killing an immediate member of their family, and then have thus gained the evil powers that are associated with skinwalkers.

The ’ánt’įįhnii are human beings who have gained supernatural power by breaking a cultural taboo. Specifically, a person is said to gain the power to become a yee naaldlooshii upon initiation into the Witchery Way. Both men and women can become ’ánt’įįhnii and therefore possibly skinwalkers, but men are far more numerous. It is generally thought that only childless women can become witches.

Oh yes even we Native Americans have our darker side and you dont get any darker than a yee naaldlooshii. wither you believe in skinwalkers or not is irrealivent. there really are people out there right now who think of themselves as yee naaldlooshii.

The old people in my tribe seldom speak of yee naaldlooshii I once remember asking my grandfather about them and watched him turn white as a sheet.

So what are we talking about? A person who craved power so much they were willing to kill who ever they loved most in this world father mother child wife husband and in the most gruesome way. What powers do they gain? well skinwalking is just one but there is a cravate they must chose an animal form relative to a humans size. their other powers? well think Superman... Able to jump from one Mesa to another, push down a full grown tree, rip a house apart as it were merely a child's toy and yes steal your soul... once they have that they can mimic that person.

A sure sign you have a skinwalker in your neighborhood is grave robing freshly dead are preferred. another sign is when they kill they take the skin from the palms of the hands and souls of your feet. they also cut off the pennies or clitoris... some even blame cattle mutilations on skinwalkers.
that is not fairytale at least once a year they find a body out of the Navajo rez just that way....

Often you hear stories from truck drivers out on the highway late at night who will look out the window and see a skinwalker running along side their big truck. I once heard that an oil rig that exploded was quietly attributed to a skin walkers rage and once I was told a story by an Albuquerque police offcer who right in downtown said he confronted one thinking it was just a drunk walking the streets at night, he said her face was covered in gray corpse powder, chanting, when he told her to stop she turned blew another kind of dust at him and just like that she was gone. I have also heard stories of ranch houses and hogan's being nearly being ripped apart all the sheep in a pen all dying at once... THankfully I've never encountered one, I pray it stays that way. Its a much safer deal to tell the story rather than be the story

The most frightening thing about skinwalkers is not that you believe in them... you see The most frightening thing about skinwalkers is their are real people out there right now who think they are or want desperately to become a Yee Naaldlooshii... SO if you ever find yourself in the four corners aprt of the country and see a person with their face covered in gray powder... I suggest you run....

In the heart of my city, one of the tallest structures and something that can be seen from just about anywhere in the city limits, is a large clocktower that sits on a great hill. Originally it's use was as a water tower, decorated with a clock and red brick exterior. It s now a museum, it's winding staircase lined with art.
When it was built, the story goes that the land had belonged to an indian family, and they lamented the loss of this land terribly. One grandson vowed he would never leave this peice of land, he was thrown into jail many times but would return to state his peace, and get his family land back. On the day of the grand opening of the water tower, he had slept at the foot of the tower, and prayed to any entity listening to curse the tower, to make it so ugly that no one would want to look at it, or make it frightening and people would run away from it!
Sleeping at the foot of the tower his waking vision took him by such suprise, he thought his prayers were answered! Lying there looking up his joy was too much, and he died of a heart attack.
This is what he saw:

However he was lying down, looking up, this is what he would have seen had he stood up:

Interesting, upside down the tower kind of looks like a malicious smile, good reponse. Also to the native American I have heard stories about SKinwalkers mostly from Hunt for The Skinwalker, they sound like really monstrous entities.

Sandbach Boys School

Snadbach boys school is a very old building i believe was established in the 1500's, I spent the first two years of secondary at this school and with every old building there are bound to be spectres, tradgedys and mysterys within its walls.

This first story is about a boy from when the school was a boarding school, the boy suffered from a sleep walking disorder and would often act out his dreams. Usual, because his room was on top of a spiral, his friends would ahve to escort him back to bed. However on one particular night they didn't wake up and the boy walked out the dormantary door and fell down the spiral staricase killing him. Rumour has it you can hear footsteps and a rumbling coming from that very staircase, and only senior members of staff are welcomed in there now.

Another story is simply a ghost story, apparently if you go to the old priciples office, a room that has remained as it was when a previous priciple with a smoking addiction died...minus the dead body, you can sometimes hear coughing and smell cigarette smoke.

The final story concerning this place is about a young boy in a soccer class who hit his head on a goal post, apparently he lasted 6 days before he died from a bloodcutt suddenly in class.

the next time i write ill talk about the town of Sandbach which is where this school is and the legends surrounding the old town.

Since you put me in the mood to share stories I will add this one from the Spanish culture...
before you read this story first know that in old southwestern lore when a Bruja (Bad Witch) was killed they chopped up her body and buried the pieces at a crossroads arms legs and torso at the four corners the head in the center of said intersection. It is said that when you encounter the spirit of a Bruja it will be at a crossroads....Don't know if it was ever really done but that is the story... reportedly true...
still you chose to believe or not I'm only sharing a story remember.
My friend Isabela called me one evening before dinner. She was sobbing as she told me that she and her husband Enrique were getting divorced. He had moved out of the house earlier that day and Isabela was distraught.

I called my husband, who was on a business trip in Chicago, and he agreed that I should go stay with Isabela for a few days to help her during this difficult time. I packed a small suitcase and got right into the car. It was late, and it would take me at least four hours to drive from my home to Sante Fe. Isabela was expecting me to arrive around midnight.

As I traveled down the dark, wet highway, I kept feeling chills, as if someone or something were watching me. I kept looking in the rear view mirror, and glancing into the back seat. No one was there. Don't be ridiculous, I told myself, wishing fervently that I was home in my bed instead of driving on a dark, rainy highway. There was almost no traffic, and I heartily wished that I would soon reach Sante Fe.

I turned off the highway just before I reached the city, and started down the side roads that led to Isabela's house. As I approached a small crossroads, I saw a woman step into the street directly in front of my car. I shrieked in fright and slammed on my brakes, praying I would miss her.

The car shuddered to a halt, and I looked frantically around for the woman. Then I saw her, right beside my window, looking in at me. She had the face of a demon, twisted, eyes glowing red, and short pointed teeth. I screamed as she leapt at my window, her clawed hands striking the glass. I put my foot down on the accelerator and the car leapt forward. For a few terrible moments, she ran along side the car, keeping up easily and striking at me again and again. Then she fell behind and in the rear view mirror I saw her growing taller and taller, until she was as large as a tree. Red light swirled around her like mist, and she pointed after me, her mouth moving though I could not make out the words. I jerked my attention back to the road, afraid what might happen to me if my car ran off the street.

I made it to Isabela's house in record time and flung myself out of the car, pounding on her door frantically and looking behind me to see if the demon-faced woman had followed me. Isabela came running to the door and let me in.

"Shut the door! Shut it!" I cried frantically, brushing past her into the safety of the house.

"Jane, what is wrong?" she asked, slamming the door shut. She grabbed my hand and led me into the living room. I sank onto the couch and started sobbing in fear and reaction. After several minutes, I managed to gasp out my story. Isabela gasped and said: "Are you sure you were at a crossroads when you saw her?"

I nodded, puzzled by her question.

"It must have been La malhora," Isabela said, wringing her hands.

"The bad hour?" I asked.

"This is bad, Jane. Very bad," Isabela cried. "La Malhora only appears at a crossroads when someone is going to die."

Ordinarily, I would have laughed at such a superstition, but the appearance of the demon-woman had shaken me. Isabela got me a cup of hot cocoa, brought my luggage in from the car, and sent me to bed. She was so concerned for me that she didn't once mention the divorce or Enrique.

I felt much better the next morning, but I could not shake the feeling of dread that grew within me all day. Neither of us mentioned La Malhora, but we were both thinking of her when I told Isabela that I wanted to go home. Isabela insisted on accompanying me. I flatly refused to drive after dark. I was afraid I would see the demon-woman again when I passed the crossroads.

We left the next morning, and we hadn't been home more than twenty minutes when a police car pulled into my driveway. I knew at once what it meant, and so did Isabella.

The officers spoke very gently to me, but nothing could soften the news. My husband had been mugged on the way back to his hotel after dinner last night. His body had not been found until this morning. He had been shot in the head and was killed instantly.

People have reported seeing a Jaguar in our area, in New Zealand.

There was also a segment on the news about Very tall trees which had been stripped of all there branches, during the night, without any sounds or disturbances, and then found the next morning with traffic cones on top. They where litterally just huge trunks with traffic cones on top.

They showed footage of these trees and people gave testimonies of seeing them the day before perfectly intact.

Then a police man came on the news and stated that they had established contact with aliens!?!?!?!?! Seriously. They insinuated it was somekind of prank. But it seems an incredibly impressive prank to me. It was never mentioned on the news again.

In my particular Boston neighborhood (Jamaica Plain, Roslindale, West Roxbury and Brookline) there is an urban legend concerning a supposedly haunted or possessed statue. This is known as the Statue of Gloria. Since childhood I have heard of this rumor.Only people from these parts of the city have heard of it. It seems there exists a statue that was erected by a very disturbed father after the brutal rape and murder of his daughter. It is located on private land where it is guarded. Apparently it is missing some limbs that move or bleed on their own. Several people I have spoken with claim to have seen yet none can remember exactly where it is. I would love to find and photograph it.

This sounds really crazy, but I assure you it is true.

I used to live in a very rural area of central georgia. Lots of farms, timber, hog and chicken farms, etc.

Also, back then in the early 1980s, it was very conservative and withdrawing from outside "foreign" forces, "hippies' and "yankees". Lots of "good ol' boys" around that chewed tobacco, bass fished and deer hunted on weekends.

Imagine the shock when (and I swear this is true) a very large latex/rubber vibrator/marital aid/vibrator/dildo appeared stuck to the hood of the mayor's truck.

Tales of the incident burned through Roberta, Georgia like wildfire. The mayor supposedly tore the 'phallus' off of his hood, cursed and threw it into the garbage.

About three days later, the object appeared again, stuck to the front bumper of a truck frequently driven around town by the DOT manager. According to eyewitnesses, he drove all over the place for better than a whole day with this thing proudly wiggling and jiggling on the front of his truck.

Of course, when he saw it, he threw it in the back of the truck and said he took it and tossed it into a pond at the bottom of a local sand pit.

About three days later, a well known town lawyer was observed at a red light with the rubber penis wagging on top of his Cadillac. A couple of the guys standing on the sidewalk smoking ran over and pointed it out to him.

Of course, the police got involved. The event happened a few more times to several relatively well-known local citizens before it finally stopped. Even after a relatively costly and lengthy investigation, the cause & source of the event was never discovered, although it is still spoken about in hushed tones among the locals.

Very true story.
