Should there be an ATS plan, in case the SHTF? Like a survivors colony?

I'll bite on this one with a loose plan.
If all holy bad stuff happened and I had to cut and run I'd first head for the mountains or at least foothills either coast. Since I'm east coast I 'd head up into Cumberland Gap area and get a feel for just what is it thats happening. Depending on the scenario I may choose to fight there for awhile if I'm defending the eastern approah but keepeimg in mind the Mississippi. Depending on the situation I'd rather get across it as early as possible for at last stand in the Rockies somewhere. That again would depend on all the different scenarios and who I'm evading and fighting.
If Im just trying to live again I'd hunt plant and fish the foothills of the mountains of either coast probably near a fertile river floodplain.

I think it's a good idea but I'm about to pick it apart! First of all, it would have to be according to location. Active members would need to band together based on where they live or plan to be (in a given period of time). For any collaberative effort to work, it would need to be of the willingness of likeminded individuals. Some ATSers are very stubborn and not nearly amicable enough to co-ist peacefully. Based on that fact alone, I would sub-segregate.....lol. In my perfect scenario, I would devise groups as needed based on psychology and their ability to be productive together. I cannot tolerate ineffectual arguing and counterproductive shenanigans so I would work diligently to put together the most efficient tribes under a common bond of respect. That translates to: although we will be segregated in our belief systems and survival theories, a common respect will be in order at all times. Live differently but peacefully. No more than 4 Northeast USA groups should be necessary IMO.

Plans would have to be worked out well in advance of any S Storm as the first thing we are going to loose is communication.

I think a very good indication of what would happen in a TEOTWAWKI scenario is described in Max Brooks' "World War Z". If you haven't read that yet, I highly suggest you put it on your list.

Barring the goverment being our problem, you would likely see a number of city/village conclaves forming, first based on necessity and proximity, and then evolving with time to cities with shared economic visions, religious beliefs, social mores, etc.

Unfortunately, you would also see large 'prison state' communities as well, run by despots and monsters with heavy weaponry and no moral conscience at all. As well as roving tribes of cannibals, psychotic ferals, and who knows what else...

Okay here's my thoughts...
in a real SHTF/WW3 I believe we'd get little or no warning its coming.
Secondly just like we saw on 9/11 I think the powers that be would suspend all civil traffic... in other words you get nowhere fast...

But if I'm wrong any one who can make it to the Hooter's on San Mateo and Montgomery in Albuquerque NM on said day of said event...I'll buy the first round cause let me tell you buddy I'm going to need a stiff drink and some nice Hooters to look at while we plan our next move... they call that encouragement ya know

Has anyone considered that when they get ready to "head for the hills" that there may already be a group in the area you're running to? At that point, you're the invader and threat. Whoever gets there first has the duty of defending their hidey hole.

Those of us still hanging around are probably a little late.

If you get to know somebody on ATS and decide they might be an asset, U2U them and see if you can't swap email addresses or pre-arranged meeting places.

I heartily agree w/ you on the elitists.

I personally will probably try to get myself back home, get my family and then once they and maybe a few of my friends (if they want to come) are secure, we'll get the hell out of dodge.

I don't know if I'd want to be part of ANY enclave started up in the US after such an occurence. Especially being that I'm military now. I could just see the hell that would be raised if for some reason I wasn't able to change and had to bail out in my uniform w/ my gear.

Tallest building in a few miles
Has it's own silo
next to a lake
Next to open fields
Next to major road way
Already surrounded by barbed wire fences
Enough room for a good number of people
Easily defended
many other reasons


Ive done my homework!

Interestingly enough, I've been thinking heavily lately about where my first place of refuge would be when TSHF.

And each time I do, I'm invariably drawn back to the sea.

Why, you ask?
Firstly, I'm a Sailor. I've spent a few years at sea and I absolutely loved it out there. The sea is something I'm familiar with. Granted, I spent this time on a 567' long US Navy destroyer, but I saw my share of rough waters (North Atlantic in November, anyone?)

Anyways, back to the topic.

A 30-35' sailboat seems like a very good candidate to me for a group of 6 people or so to ride out the initial crisis. I've been doing research lately as to how much water, minerals, food, etc., are needed per day by the averaged sized man, woman, and child for survival.
Also, a sailboat requires no fuel and produces no waste or smoke stacks to be seen from a distance. Obviously, its not as fast as a motor powered vessel, but the idea is not to outrun, but simply to stay off the map.
To this end, I've begun learning, a very small bit so far, about celestial navigation and purifying water for drinking and hygeine purposes. And after that I plan on learning how to sail properly, when I have more time to devote to it (extremely busy lately, hopefully TEOTWAWKI will wait a tad longer )

The largest hinderance to this 'dream' of mine at the moment is that I need to find 4 others who share the same ideas as me to help fund the purchasing and outfitting of the vessel, and these would have to be people I would trust with my life.

Since that is obviously what would be taking place.

As far as I can see DaddyBare is the only one whose any fun. We Virginians need our chaw and corn droppings, can’t rightly carry on without’n such. Hooters would get me killed though; Russians have NO sense of humor, especially blonde haired blue eyes of death ones who were trained in the Komsomol with an AK-47.

Seriously though, if you do not have a network set up and a place to bug out to by now, you are in serious trouble. You’d better unbutt your current AO and head to the countryside quickly, if you are anywhere near a large city that is.

The more I think about it, the funnier it can get. Let's see, you have the sceptics, the out and out non-believers, the 'I believe everything', the paranoids, the doomsday croud, the fanatics, the 'tin foil hat' people, the thinkers, remote viewers and paranormal croud, political, bunny huggers and of course the ones that just sit on the fence watching everybody else.

What a mess!

to the sailboat idea. I've had the same idea for a while now, especially for those living in the coastal lower 48. Moving inland will lead to nothing but trouble, of course this is all contigent on the situation we face.

As far as a meet up is concerned, why not make it easy and visit the ATS gear store and pick-up a hat or t-shirt? Makes things easy for identification. Further investigation of potential group members could go one from there.

There are definately a couple of ATS'rs I be honored to have in my survival group. Might I suggest that Irishchic bring her pole?

Just a hypothetical here,NOT the way I might personally feel but a "what if..."

Would you be selective in allowing people into your "group" ie would you want those who could work as hard, were relatively healthy,brought something to the table in terms of skills and abilities???

Or would you simply have an "open door" policy because...well...people need to be cared for by each other in hard-times.

I'm not saying leave the others on the banks for the crocs like the Eygptians did but rather if you could have that choice,would you exercise it?

I'm starting to think that because I AM in a "good position",I'd want to share but would also have serious reservations about the "who" of it all...it'd be like a mini-community after all and the op to really start out on a good foot and make "something" out of the chaos?

Or...would I simply go it alone and take my chances...

I was planning on making myway to the coast and stealing a boat. I'm sure some poor sap that has a nice boat will be hauled off to a camp. I don't have the money to buy a 35' sailboat, but I have a gun.

Ill be headed your way for my daring boat theft. my mom lives on an island down there, plenty of boats.

Boats are vulnerable, there will be too many pirates in open water.

Why not think big and understand the first line of defence is attack. Air superiority is the key. We could get a few airships for community living, flanked by a Apache helicopters and Euro-fighters.

Joking aside, I still stand by the fact the safest place will be in the trees. Monkey's do it, so we should go back to our primeval roots. Could set up some kind of covert tree-top community with supply pulley systems set up and defences would consist of acid buckets ready to pour onto unsuspecting militia. Water will be from the condensate from leaves.

I have a capped mine shaft in my back garden, so if TSHTF, i'll be getting my shovel to do some exploratory digging; that will be my escape hatch if goons start knocking on doors with vaccination needles and RFID acquisition tools.

Should be interesting later this year when they have another G20 summit. Let's see if they instigate an IMF one World currency. Then will be the time to prepare; until then, it's just fun 'n games.
