After that 7.1 off the coast of Honduras this morning....and the possible tsunami watch....Now we have one off Mexico's coast....

I found this article quite interesting:

DANICA COTO | Associated Press Writer
8:07 PM EDT, May 27, 2009
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — It's only the moon, emergency officials in Puerto Rico are telling nervous islanders who have feared that recent extreme tides portend a tsunami or biblical catastrophe.

Waters receded up to 50 feet (15 meters) this week during low tide on Puerto Rico's southern coast, sparking a flurry of calls to seismology and geological agencies from people worried about natural disasters or supernatural events. Tsunamis are sometimes preceded by a dramatic drop in sea level.

"There are people who have said it's a biblical sign," said Pedro Calixto, who lives in the southern coastal town of Guayama. "There are others who don't dare go into the ocean because they believe it's a supernatural thing."

Severe tide changes occur a couple of times a year worldwide, and are happening now because the moon is at its closest point to earth, said government seismologist Alberto Lopez Venegas. The closer the moon is, the stronger its gravitational pull on water.

So....can a tide shift happen BEFORE an earthquake or a tsunami? Are today's earthquakes related at all? Do these earthquakes have anything to do with the moon?

I am "seismologically challenged" ...but I just wanted to put those questions out there.
Maybe an ATSer with more knowledge can give me some perspective here.

Not sure if it has anything to do with the tides and the moon, but with the water receeding like that it must put strain elsewhere. If I lived off the coast of one of these places i'd be pretty terrified. What does the water receeding like that have to do with the bible as i am bible illiterate?

I think this is getting Creepy.

Only times ahead will tell what's in store for us..

the tide only goes in directly before a tsunami, and it moves outwards drastically, sometimes with miles of water being sucked back into the ocean. the tide dropping so suddenly and with no imediate after effects is indeed strange. i can see how some might interpret this as a supernatural incident, as so many (including many of us on this site) are doing these days.

lets just hope we dont get a large scale war and large numbers of disasters at the same time... because, unlike katrina, all those people would be helpless without the army

You are right and didnt I see some where that the military are working around the clock to build sandbag walls , I cant remember where I read it, but that shows they are expecting unusuall water traffic..
