Amnesty International says global recession leading to increased repression

LONDON (AP) — The global financial crisis is leading cash-strapped governments around the world to crack down on people protesting against rising poverty and unemployment, Amnesty International said Thursday.

Human rights have become a casualty in many places as attention is focused on pressing financial problems, the human rights organization said in its annual report.

Just as many might fear, it appears that the worsening global economy is being used many places as a reason to impose tighter controls on civilian populations and to restrict freedoms and civil liberties.

While the media keeps pointing to every little surge and rally on Wall Street as evidence of a slow recovering economy even though the telltale over all volume of trading is significantly down, on main streets everywhere the economy just keeps getting worse.
