Yeah I think the guy was probably in shock. Plus he could have been in hard core denial, thinking "no way is anyone burning in that car".
There was a case here in atlanta a while ago, two young guys, childhood friends driving home after a night at the bars. The passenger put his head out
of the car window to throw up and caught a guard wire securing a telephone pole (apparently driver moved too close to the right).
Anyway, took his head clean off, body still leaning out the window. The driver drove home, parked the car in the driveway and went to bed soaked in
blood. The neighbors saw the headless corpse in the car the next morning. The guy drove home just fine, I don't believe for one moment he was so
drunk he didn't see what happened.
Sometimes people just "blackout" stuff they can't deal with.
