Illinois Senate votes down bill to take DNA from all felony suspects

SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois Senate has narrowly voted down a plan to allow police to take DNA samples from felony arrest suspects.

Advocates saw the measure as adding an important crime-fighting tool. But opponents viewed it as an intrusion upon civil liberties.

The bill, pushed by Sen. Matt Murphy (R-Palatine), drew just 28 votes after overwhelmingly passing the House last month.

Here's some good news. The mere fact that this plan was on the table to start with is disturbing, but at least it got placed in the garbage where it belongs. This is promising, but it won't be long until another scheme is cooked up to get everyone's DNA in a database. That's an inevitability. The only question is, how they will manage to sidestep the Fourth Amendment.

It's not over yet:

After nearly a 90-minute debate, Murphy kept the measure alive through a parliamentary maneuver, leaving open the possibility there could still be another vote before the Senate’s targeted May 29 adjournment if he and the measure’s House sponsor, Rep. Susana Mendoza (D-Chicago), can round up two more Senate votes.

What's the bill number? I think this is it, but I'm not 100%.
