www.washingtonpost.com

President Obama is expected to announce late this week that he will create a "cyber czar," a senior White House official who will have broad authority to develop strategy to protect the nation's government-run and private computer networks, according to people who have been briefed on the plan.

The adviser will have the most comprehensive mandate granted to such an official to date and will probably be a member of the National Security Council...

We can understand the motivation behind this move, from this quote:

Having the adviser report to both the national security and economic advisers suggests that the White House is seeking to ensure a balance between homeland security and economic concerns, the sources said.

So, there's two mandates:

  • Ensure that the government has secure access to spy and monitor the Internet as they see fit.
  • Ensure that favored corporations reap profits from the Internet, via Digital Rights Management and the elimination of peer-to-peer file sharing, and that the government gets their piece of the pie.

All hail the new Czar! We're starting to need a 'Czar Czar' to keep track of them all, eh?

what's with using the word 'czar'?
    Isn't the word itself oppressive?

Is the word a picture of what is to come... I mean if you think about it?

This should be illegal, no one is allowed to have any ownership of the internet. The internet is just a space, you can't own space.

I strongly feel as if Obama abhors free speech and activism.
