The vast wasteland known as TV has always wanted one thing: Good ratings. One way to assure a success is to spin it off in many different ways. Here is an example of three shows that created many different spin-offs:

All In the Family
Maude
Good Times
The Jeffersons
Checking In (Marla Gibb's Florence spin-off)
Gloria
Archie Bunker's Place
704 Hauser (characters moved into Archie's old house)

Love American Style
Happy Days (the show was a segment on the above show. American Graffiti came out later)
Larverne and Shirley
Lenny and Squiggy (pilot show only)
Mork and Mindy
Joannie Loves Chachi

The Danny Thomas Show (Make Room For Daddy)
The Andy Griffith Show
Gomer Pyle USMC
Mayberry RFD
The Joey Bishop Show
Make Room for Granddaddy

The above were successful back in the day while most people think the only spin-offs are CSI and L&O.

I enjoyed the spin offs of Doctor Who, Torchwood and the Sarah Jane Adventures.

I would have liked to have caught the spin offs of MASH, AfterMASH and WALTER.

I never heard of Walter, but it was a pilot for a series that was not picked up. Only Eastern Coast and Central Time viewers saw the show.

www.imdb.com...

I saw AfterMASH when it first ran and it wasn't to bad. The first season did pretty decent, but viewers did not like it enough to follow it on a time change and it was canceled during the second season.

M*A*S*H
Trapper John MD
AfterMASH
Walter (pilot only)

Law & Order
Criminal Intent
Special Victims Unit
Trial By Jury
Conviction

Perfect Strangers
Family Matters
Full House

Hill Street Blues
Beverly Hill Buntz (Dennis Franz' character spin-off)

Star Trek
The Next Generation
Deep Space Nine
Voyager
Enterprise
(There was going to be a sitcom spin-off about Troi's mother that never got off the ground)

Can't believe I forgot about Trapper John, I catch it when I can, not as good as the series, but still very good.

Yeah, I know that Walter never really got off the ground, but I still would have liked seeing the pilot. Always liked Radar.

I like Law and Order, and SVU is to me one of the better, though most disturbing spin offs in terms of acting. Though CI was pretty cool.

I am trying to find the shows that had the most spin-offs. I thought Law & Order had one more, but so far I cannot find it. I think the original has improved with the best cast in a while. I have always been a fan of CI, and while SVU is quite good, it can be very disturbing because of its subject matter.

As far as pilots go, I will include them as they were made with the intent to become a series. "Walter" actually was aired, but "Lenny and Squiggy" was not. I also plan to put in weird spin-offs, such as the "Beverly Hills Buntz" show.

Beverly Hillbillies
Petticoat Junction
Green Acres

The Brady Bunch
The Brady Bunch Hour
The Brady Brides
A Very Brady Christmas (TV movie and pilot)
The Bradys

Ohh, ohh, I want to play!!!

You forgot one 'Love, American Style' spinoff: 'Wait 'til Your Father Get's Home!' It was the 70's version of 'Family Guy'!

I'd like to add:

Stargate: SG1
Stargate: Atlantis
and soon Stargate: Universe

JAG
NCIS
and this fall NCIS: Los Angeles

And the list goes on and on...

I do remember that cartoon as it was rather adult for its time.

Also, I am forgetting many series had animated spin-offs on Saturday mornings:

Happy Days
Laverne and Shirley
Gilligan's Island
The Brady Bunch
The Addams Family
The Munsters
I Dream of Jeannie

The list goes on. I guess the cartoon creators also run out of ideas and just animate a TV show. Add a talking animal to keep it real.
