Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is proposing to completely eliminate the state’s welfare program for families, medical insurance for low-income children and Cal Grants cash assistance to college and university students.

Michigan's unemployment rate last month was the highest in the country once gain. According to a US Labor Department report issued Friday, Michigan lost 38-thousand-400 jobs last month, pushing the state's unemployment rate to 12-point-nine percent. Only California and Texas lost more jobs in April. State officials say the manufacturing and construction sectors felt the brunt of the job losses in Michigan last month.
Schwarzenegger is considering eliminating the Healthy Families program, the CalWorks program and Cal Grants to college students. Other options include reducing spending on mental health services, child welfare services and cutting another $600 million from the state's public universities, she said.
Governor plans to completely eliminate welfare for families
The Healthy Families Program is low cost insurance that provides health, dental and vision coverage to children who do not have insurance today and do not qualify for no-cost Medi-Cal.
CalWORKs is a welfare program that gives cash aid and services to eligible needy California families. The program serves all 58 counties in the state and is operated locally by county welfare departments. If a family has little or no cash and needs housing, food, utilities, clothing or medical care, they may be eligible to receive immediate short-term help. Families that apply and qualify for ongoing assistance receive money each month to help pay for housing, food and other necessary expenses
