It's been a long time since I visited 4Chan

I used to be involved rather heavily with parts of that board, but I stopped after awhile because I started to find it morally repulsive.

I don't often boycott a website based on morality. (Lord knows I spend a lot of time in teh gutters of teh intrawebz, at sites that would curl many people's toes.) But I think some of the images there go way over the line. If anyone remembers the old, now-defunct site "Ogrish," they might understand.

Not only do I not want to see such things personally, I also find the site itself "ethically challenged" for allowing what goes on there to go on, and I don't want to support it by visiting it. And this from somebody who considers himself one of the staunchest possible defenders of internet freedom, and an eternal enemy of censorship.

As human beings, there are certain lines that should not be crossed on moral principles. /b/ crosses more than a few of such lines.

Or maybe I'm just getting old...

Anyone agree with me? Disagree? And if anyone here still goes there, I'd be interested to know whether there have been any significant changes to the board in the last few years.

I'll have to disagree. If any website scream freedom, it's 4chan.

The way I see it.. It is a website of the best and the worst minds on the internet. You see some very original, amazingly creative and funny posts. Then you see some really sick and twisted things, again the best and the worst of the internet. But you get that and you expect it when you visit. Some don't like it and it's true some of their activities are truly questionable. I don't think people should take them too seriously but yeah, people have died from some of the abuse they exposed themselves to.

I really wonder what happened with that clash between anonymous and Scientology.. hmm

4chan gave me a horrible virus. As much fun as it is to look at the randomness on that site, I just don't think i can visit that site anymore.

I think it was 4chan that gave me the virus. There was a warning on there a couple of weeks ago, and my comp has been destroyed since then.

I visited it once and immediatly left. I met some people that visit the site regularly and they were a-holes.

They definetly cross the line on that site. And most people there are mean.

I used to use 4chan for acquisition of documents. I had to stop using them when I found it was also being used for child pornography. It is NOT a good place to be anymore.

Agreed I love the sense of humor actually and I have no lack of an ability to ignore what I find offensive...

But there is stuff on there that breaks the line into incriminating and I simply can't condone anyway. Just strikes me as a potential legal nightmare accident waiting to happen to have pages from 4chan on your machine.

I was reading something, somewhere that linked into the "anonymous" phenomena and wiki'd it, it sounded very interesting. So, I've been lurking on 4chan and there's some pretty vile stuff there... What I do find very interesting though is the "hive" mind of it all and that 4chan itself seems to think of itself as that.

I really liked the idea of anonymous vs "..." - especially taking on scientology, hilarious. I can't see them in it for the long-haul, it'll get shut down sooner or later and that'll be the interesting bit - to see how "they" react.

Ultimately though, it's ok for cheap laughs if you can wade through the filth.
