ScienceDaily (May 20, 2009) — The bombardment of Earth nearly 4 billion years ago by asteroids as large as Kansas would not have had the firepower to extinguish potential early life on the planet and may even have given it a boost, says a new University of Colorado at Boulder study.

An interesting news article about the origins of life. This has got me thinking that perhaps this could be the case on many different planets around the universe hit with asteroids, especially Mars.

Scientists theorized that the heavy bombardment around 3.9 million years ago may have been extreme enough to sterilize Earth, new findings suggest that it actually just melted a portion of the Earth's crust which helped form new life.
