Gurkhas win right to settle in UK

news.bbc.co.uk

All Gurkha veterans who retired before 1997 with at least four years' service will be allowed to settle in the UK, Home Secretary Jacqui Smith has said.

Ms Smith told MPs she was "proud to offer this country's welcome to all who have served in the brigade of Gurkhas".

It comes after a high-profile campaign by Joanna Lumley and other supporters of Gurkha rights - and an embarrassing Commons defeat for the government.

Well it is about time. The Gurkhas finally have the right to settle in the UK. I am absolutely delighted that this has been finally pushed through. Joahanna Lumley should become a politician, she even embarrrased a government minister publicly. Which was hilarious. Maybe that is what we need in our parliement. I for one admire her determination in carrying on the fight for the Gurkhas.

Maybe now the UK Government will listen rather than do what the hell it wants.

Hopefully this Government will not go back on its word.

Sometimes it hurts to the right thing, it might cost a lot of money or be politically unpopular.

Allowing the Gurkhas to stay is the right thing - Too bad it was like pulling teeth to get the result.

Why not, the UK seems to have an open door policy for everyone these days.

At least the Gurkhas deserve it.

Isn't it ironic that until now this lousy government has given passports, benefits and homes to all those who turn up on a back of a lorry even though many have no intention of contributing anything meaningful to our society and in some cases their sole intention is to threaten us, and yet those that fight for us, spill their blood for us and in some cases die for us have to fight tooth and nail to get the same treatment
