Beutifull post, i understand what your saying now in a survival situation when the SHTF and you think all is lost, i reckon hearing some of your favorite music would go a long way to keeping your spirits up! This reminded me of ShawShank
I think that desribes what you said perfectly GREAT POST

First...WOW! I'm a bit shocked with the reactions of some people suggesting the poster should kill themselves. Let alone a moderator saying the same.

Second...I wouldn't say that humans are a virus or a parasite, but I would agree that we act and resemble one. I would suggest that what we are is greedy. We want, and are willing and able to take, in order to satisfy our every whim without regard for other "things" around us...and...we are often too stupid to see when we are burning the boat in which we sail.

If humanity would live to experience life, share, love and contemplate instead of constantly searching for something physical...something we can buy or build to make our lives satisfactory...we would all be better. And better off.

Not all humans are animals like you insist on humans being. I believe there was a time when humans and Earth lived in harmony and we did have a give and take relationship. Personally I think this modern world we live in is a fake plastic world that all of us have been assimilated to over generations. We have the means to live a modern life style and still be at peace with earth. I am getting off topic but what I am trying to say is that not everyone is an animal although we all have those animal instincts, we humans have grown to control those urges and hopefully one day we will grow out of these animal urges. You know what they say? Monkey see monkey do so maybe if a few people set a good example maybe the rest of society will follow. I do agree that we are a virus who invade the resources that are mother earth.

"Kill yourself, lead the pack"

We're all part of the problem. There are many solutions that aren't really solutions, we can't control overpopulation, we have an awful hard time minimizing the exaggerated use of resources. We cannot cooperate with the Earth simply because we hold our own goals first, everyone else's comes second.

People are raised to think we MUST procreate. We are raised under religions that say somehow we deserve this Earth and thus must enjoy it, which translates into destroying it for our own greedy purposes.

We might as well have that high and mighty arrogant attitude about being the rulers of the world, there are too many of us.

The only weapon we had against the rest of the animal kingdom is our quantity. Otherwise we'd be as powerless to a lion as a pig would be. Now it's all about destroying the predators' environment or relocating them so that we may have the upper hand, be it for food or amusement.

I don't want to sound like a chicken# but I would kill myself if it meant million others doing the same, one death won't help at all. Even killing millions wouldn't help, for anything remotely noticeable we'd have to get rid of 3 billion IMHO.

Even then you KNOW those numbers will duplicate in little to no time, that's just the way of the parasite. The way of the humans.

So accept your place in the world, no matter how hard you try to look at it, you ain't doing anyone good you're just here to live off your greedy needs. And so am I.

Not all humans are animals like you insist on humans being.

Yes, we are. All human being are animals by our very definition. You are motile and ingest and digest living cells to survive. That is the very definition of what it means to be an animal, and human beings are animals. That is a FACT.

Ever stop to wonder if perhaps, the reason humanity just can't seem to get it right, is because humanity doesn't know who the hell we are. We all want to think we're god's perfect little snowflakes - or that we are some kind of ascended beings brought low by aliens - be they reptilians, greys, or body thetans. So long as you continue to wrap yourselfs in comfortable delusions about who we are as a species, we will forever seem out of sync with our nature. Indeed, obscuring a view of exactly who and what we are is only ever going to keep people chasing their comfortable delusions and prevent any REAL progress from being made. Progress in accepting who we are, progress in recognizing what makes us who we are, and the social progress that comes with the knowledge and recognition of who we are - so that we can more consciously identify and change our core behaviors.

I look at humanity sometimes, and it's like watching a kid with down syndrome with his shirt tied around his neck like a cape pretending to be a superhero. But he's not a hero... he's just a human being with a shirt tied around his neck and a wonderful (though inaccurate) fantasy.

I believe there was a time when humans and Earth lived in harmony and we did have a give and take relationship.

If there ever was such a time, it was extremely short lived. Nature does not form a balance. Extinction is the rule, not the other way around. Over 99% of all species that once existed on Earth are now extinct. That wouldn't be the case if there was a balance.

Indeed... humanity is the ONLY hominid species left out of dozens and dozens of them we've found in the fossil record. That is not a balance.

we can't control overpopulation

We can, but the means do not justify the horrific ends. Overpopulation isn't a problem for the planet, or nature. We will expand until our resources deplete... at which time our growth will hit a barrier and will scale back as war, disease, famine, and death associated with resource depletion take it's toll... and it will continue until our population levels reach levels sustainable by the resources.

The concern of overpopulation has nothing to do with the Earth... but the consequences of what will happen to us. Those who raise the call of overpopulation are just trying to pull humanity back a bit before we hit that wall.

We cannot cooperate with the Earth simply because we hold our own goals first

No species does, and you cannot cooperate with an consciously inert system.

The only weapon we had against the rest of the animal kingdom is our quantity.

Er, no... it's our technology - be it hunting tactics, high powered rifles, or shafts of wood with sharpened bone and rock tips.

Now it's all about destroying the predators' environment or relocating them so that we may have the upper hand

Now? NOW?!? Humanity and our hominid companion species have been systematically driving out and killing off the mega-fauna/super predators for millions of years. This is NOTHING new.

that's just the way of the parasite. The way of the humans.

Parasite? Every thing you are, each and every molecule in your body comes from this Earth. Your body itself was shaped by billions of years of slight mutations in life thrown against the natural environment.

You ARE the Earth.

So accept your place in the world

I honestly don't think you even know your place in this world.

This is a sad post. We are extremely flawed to be sure, but not worthy of extinction.
I believe you have some self hatred that you're directing toward humanity as a whole.

There is good in everyone... finding the good in yourself and working to make things better for humanity is far nobler than wiping out the species... or even yourself.

I hope you find your way, and life becomes better for you... and us.

Don't worry at this rate we won't have too long to wait!

The speed at which species are being lost is much faster than any we've seen in the past -- including those [extinctions] related to meteor collisio
www.well.com...

Fifty per cent of the Earth's species will have vanished inside the next 100 years; mankind is using almost half the energy available to sustain life on the planet, and this figure will only grow as our population leaps from 5.7 billion to ten billion inside the next half-century. Such a dramatic and overwhelming mass extinction threatens the entire complex fabric of life on Earth, including the species responsible for it: Homo sapiens...We suck our sustenance from the rest of nature in a way never before seen in the world, reducing its bounty as ours grows. We are, as Edward Wilson has put it, "an environmental abnormality."...Humans endanger the existence of species in three principal ways... Why has there been this criticism of scientists whose expertise supposedly is the understanding of the dynamics of biodiversity? Perhaps one reason is that the message is so startling that people are simply unwilling to hear it, or, if they hear it, are unwilling to believe it... Even today, humans consume 40 percent of net primary productivity (NPP) on land; that is, the total energy trapped in photosynthesis worldwide, minus that required by the plants themselves for their survival. In other words, of all the energy available to sustain all the species on Earth, Homo sapiens takes almost half. To the Stanford biologists Paul and Anne Ehrlich, the implications are ominous. "What a substantial expansion of both the population and its mobilization of resources implies for the redirection and further loss of terrestrial NPP by humanity is obvious," say the Ehrlichs. "People will try to take over all of it and lose more in the process."' For every extra I percent of global NPP commandeered by our species in the coming decades, a further I percent will become unavailable to the rest of nature. Eventually, primary productivity will fall, as space for the producers falls, and a downward spiral will eventually kick in. The world's biological diversity will plummet, including the productivity on which human survival depends. The future of human civilization therefore becomes threatened...Dominant as no other species has been in the history of life on Earth, Homo sapiens is in the throes of causing a major biological crisis, a mass extinction, the sixth such event to have occurred in the past half billion years. And we, Homo sapiens, may also be among the living dead.
www.well.com...
Mass extinctions have happened before:

The largest mass extinction event occurred around 250 million years ago, when perhaps 95 percent of all species went extinct.
www.calacademy.org...
Could happen. And it could happen to us this time!
How ironic if it happens BECAUSE of us, isn't it?

What is so troubling about this is that you are are considering a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

In other words bad behavior doesn't justify suicide/murder. PERIOD!!!

This world is fraught with "memes"--many of them destructive.

There is always a "better way" to be found and when memes get in the way of this progress, things happen at a "snail's pace".

Isn't that why we have ATS to "bust memes" and find the truth/better way??

Certainly, actually changing our ways to ensure our own
long term survival is definately out of the question for us!
Why is that so hard for most to realize? Our best days are gone.
Also we sure dont want to even mention overpopulation as a problem!
We may be labeled as socialists!

Man has little concern for other species on the ecological health of the planet as a whole. He ignores natural limits, simply because they are inconvenient. He imagines his economic activity can grow without limit, he can burn oil without limit, he can pollute without limit, he can extract resources from the earth without limit. He is fiercely loyal to his country, his company, his team, his tribe, his family, no matter what evil things they have done.

I didn't care for Life After People. Seemed like a big Evangelical post-rapture stroke fest. It may not be pretty, but if humanity were to end tomorrow - you'd have 6.5 billion rotting corpses laying around. That WILL significantly change the local environments at least in the initial few months before before our corpses are either dried or torn apart and scavenged.

Life after People may be fairly accurate in some regards, but the real truth of the matter is that even after we're dead - our flesh will still continue to affect and influence the ecosystem and climate.

And then you also have to consider what killed us. Nuclear war? That'll be a big change in their broadcast. A virus? Perhaps... but just because we die doesn't mean that virus will. If we can spread it around the globe efficiently enough to kill every single human on Earth - then that's all the more chance for a single mutation to allow it be spread throughout whatever animals are scavenging our corpses. Initially a mutation would just allow it to pass from our corspes to the scavenger - but another mutation (and these things happen all the time) would allow it to be passed from members of the same species. A gamma ray burst? Well we wouldn't be the only things toasted. Some kind of post-techno-singularity deal like Nanomachines? Perhaps... but they will likely be in our pets as well, and why stop with us?

I'm just saying, there's a LOT more variables to consider when speculating what a life after mankind might be like than what the History Channel offers. So take it for what it is... some rather morbid entertainment.

Our best days are gone.

Which days were those, exactly? The days we spent engaged in territorial tribal warfare? The nights we huddled in our caves howling at shadows? Our intellectual youthfulness spend still grasping disparately at the philosophy of discovery and debate - not even truly having a tenable grasp of reality - and those few remarkable discoveries made spent frivolously as mere curiosities for scholars and kings, but never helping the masses. The days spent watching helplessly as nature decimated our loved ones through disease, famine, predation, and disaster without even a glimpse of warning or hope of avoidance. What about the days our ancestors spent enslaved to kings or clergy for no more than the simple lot in life they were born into. People complain about "slavery to the fed" these days... but that's weak. I'm talking about actually being OWNED by other people - beaten for doing an unsatisfactory job, and having your family split in twain to other nobles. What of the days spent wallowing in ignorance of everything around us - guessing at supernatural causes, the will of the fates, of the temperaments of gods. And now... we have been given a gift so precious that generations of men have fought and died to control it. Knowledge. Free to everyone through libraries, the internet, public schooling, even collage if you can secure the proper grants. We have seen glimpses of things so distant in space and time that it dwarfs their size majesty, from the fringes of the universe. A sight that many of our ancestors would not even WANT to see, out of humility for not wanting to suspect themselves privy to things no mortal man was ever meant to see.

And as stated in the videos above... we live in one of the most peaceful eras in world history, though it may not seem that way via the media coverage. We live in a time when there are more personal rights and freedoms for those of us in the industrialized world than beyond many of our civilization building ancestors wildest dreams.

And if we play our cards right... we will in the next century provide virtual immortality at no more cost to resources than the electricity needed to keep the network up... power drawn from the Sun itself... and we may not be alone. We may end up giving birth to AI. I don't believe in destiny as a fate you must abide. I believe in destiny as unique opportunities you must work towards and grasp... and in that context, humanity may seize it's destiny by being the final stepping stone away from a purely biological biosphere - to the next grand stage in evolution. The introduction of life capable of simulating natural selection and effecting directed evolution of it's own species. It's a rare honor given only to a few. The first photosynthetic organisms which expelled oxygen and gave rise to the oxygen catastrophe - leading into the Cambrian Explosion. The first amphibians and invertebrates to make the transition from sea to land. The rodent-like mammals who repopulated the Earth after the Dinosaurs and the mega-birds died out. Our actions will enhance and accelerate evolution - ultimately making life on Earth all that much more diverse, robust, and resilient. Chemical computers building electronic computers building electro-chemical computers, and so on and so on and so on....

And we... because we can recognize this process... should now deny our selves this monumental privileged simply because of our shortsightedness?

I could go on and on... so I wonder, just how can you make the claim that our best days are gone - when for all appearances, our best days are now... and they will only get better, provided we recognize ourselves, allow others to flourish and prosper for the diversity they will inevitably bring, don't allow our selves to sink back into the demon haunted world Carl Sagan so eloquently described.

We have american idol to keep us busy/distracted anyway!

You don't truly believe that the mouth-breathing American Idol watching idiots are the only other spectrum of humanity which exists aside from the Eco-Emos and Doom & Gloomers do you? There is a WIDE and colorful spectrum of humanity out there with varying views, opinions, education levels, motivations, goals, interests, personalities, etc. Do not allow yourself to boil the individual mind down to mere stereotypes and numbers. That's the process of dehumanization - and if your dehumanizing tendencies get the better of you, you will no longer see people for who they are... but for what you've minimized them to be.

A virus. A cancer. A parasite. Something to be exterminated without prejudice. When you dehumanize others, you dehumanize yourself -because you open yourself up to the potential of preforming grossly inhuman acts against your fellow man.

So while we're on that bit of a topic... a question. For all those who suggest population control or human genocide. How can you look into the eyes of the people who died at Auschwitz and justify their death to placate your morality.

Look at those people. LOOK at them. They are not "the Jew", they are not parasites of the Earth. They are human beings. They are your brothers, fathers, mothers, cousins. But they have been dehumanized, blamed for something they had nothing to do with. And since those in power could hide behind their uniforms and see these men as naught but numbers - this was the result.

And that... is the cold - hard reality of the OPs proposition. Rather than "being the change you want to see in the world", those who support this mindset give up their humanity and blend with the false reality they project upon others.

If THAT is your idea of humanities best "bygone days", then you can have them... and you can shove them when I'm not allowed to say in detail without being reprimanded.

I edited my above statement, because a few things you said really ticked me off. So sorry if you feel I over-reacted to a minor support post, but it needed to be said - and it applies to many more people in this thread than just you.

We sure have progressed since the caveman days!

Again, I would suggest that most people don't have a clear concept of the realities of progress - nor do they even who and what the human animal is or where they evolved from. How their brains develop, and what tendencies are still manifest. By cloaking ourselves in the many ethical, ideological, spiritual, or religious disguises - we don't recognize the root causes of our behavior and why we have them. So we're merely chasing shadows and wondering why no progress is being made... often unknowingly reinforcing those negative traits in others because we thus far cannot recognize them in ourselves.

The Blank Slate philosophy has been around and in the public mind for centuries now. Even well known theories such as evolution is still horridly and profoundly misunderstood by the public, even among those who claim to understand it. It's little surprise why so many people are reinforced with the idea of Tabula Rasa... and it will take quite a lot more research, time, and education before it's even misunderstood on the same level Evolution is.

You also have to consider that, even if those traits are negative in our current society that we've built - humanity didn't evolve in large societies. We evolved as a part of small competing groups. It was beneficial to our species then. It's no so successful in the large sweeping societies we create, except relegated to function in the workplace or as entertainment (sports). However... there's nothing to really say that society won't someday collapse and we'll be forced back into that tribal life. What was beneficial then, could be beneficial again someday for our descendants. So it's perhaps... unwise... to try to "progress away from" or root these behaviors from our psyches. It's better to understand, and try to control them. Try to ascend above these base behaviors, even if we are ultimately and irrevocably chained to them.

Were the h*** do you get off? F U You dont know me, you are assuming things about me.

Starting note: I'm really writing these last few message for the "genocide of humanity for a better Earth" mindset that has been displayed across several members in this thread. So please, don't take it personal if I'm a bit terse or seem a bit judgemental. I'm just really trying to get a point across here, and my responses to you have just kinda acted as a watershed for my position.

Now, I was just going off what you said. If you support human genocide (which includes Jews and Gypsies), then logically you support the holocaust as a "good, but ultimately limited start". It doesn't matter how "humane" you might envision the process to be. The end result is exactly the same. If you don't support genocide, but support the OP's genocidal mindset - then you're an apologist for it at best.

You say people don't like looking at uncomfortable truths or hard facts. Well there it is for you... and I assure you, the actual reality of genocide is a lot more uncomfortable for those who are laying in those pits than the thought of it is to you.

I don't honestly think you do support genocide... you just perceive something to be wrong with the world and are exaggerating your considerations of a solution out of frustration. You have to understand that genocide is not a subject to be taken lightly. If the people advocating human genocide truly stood behind their convictions - then they would have to find a way to reconcile the Ends with the Means. The ends are all they're concerned about. The means, is those images I linked to. You cannot allow yourself to ignore them.

I just think you need to kind of shake people up to
get them to react. Look at darfur or rwanda for instance.
And STILL nothing gets done? Nuff said.....
You have talked of this hard reality yourself,
you want me to go back and dig it up?

Genocide is a perfect example of why we fail to even
understand how to ultimately progress.
We will never get over the sheer joy/fear of it all, it seems.
It only takes one nut case with a good speech.
