ScienceDaily (Apr. 19, 2007) — In the last year space agencies in the United States, Europe, China, Japan and India have announced their intention to resume human exploration of the Solar system, beginning with the Moon and perhaps ultimately moving on to Mars. But travel beyond the immediate vicinity of the Earth carries significant risks for astronauts, not the least of which is the exposure to sometimes high levels of radiation. Now a team of scientists at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory are set to construct an experimental magnetic shield that would protect explorers in their journeys between the planets. Dr Ruth Bamford presented this idea at the Royal Astronomical Society National Astronomy Meeting in Preston.

Now THIS is encouraging news and a huge step forward toward becoming a true space faring race. Together with electromagnetic armor plating, micro-meteorites and other objects will have a hard time penetrating the hull, if at all.

US Military using Electromagnetic armor

One of the most dangerous and pervasive threats facing American and British troops in combat zones is a primitive grenade launcher that only sets your typical terrorist back about $10.
The Anglo-American defense against this no-tech threat: an electrical force field that's costing hundreds of millions of dollars to develop.
Fitted on light armored vehicles such as personnel carriers, the force field uses a series of charged metal plates to dissipate the effects of rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs), a weapon found by the thousands from Mogadishu to Kabul to Baghdad.
RPGs and other "shape charge" munitions derive their destructive power from cones of copper embedded in their noses. When the warhead explodes, it crushes the cone, shooting out a jet of hot copper at 5,000 mph -- instantly destroying anything short of a tank.
The electrical armor system, powered by the vehicle's regular supply of electricity, stops the jets by zapping them with tens of thousands of amps of current. This vaporizes some of the deadly copper jets and reduces the rest to a relatively harmless mixture of melted and pulverized debris that disperses around the vehicle.

The future is now ladies and gentlemen!

i cannny do any more captin!!!!

hehe

that is some pretty niffty tech! I watched a hearing the other day with jimmy carter on c-span the ship that is named after his has some niffty tech also

"fule cell never needs to be re fuled"

I never knew that!

Sometimes it seems that science is dragged along on the tip of the tail of a sci-fi tale.

When this is made, perhaps man will be able to really go to the moon.

we did make a great movie tho! hehe

man is ON the moon and other planets already ; ) and im guessing other star systems

the moon is a stone away from earth but yet we send things to mars?

Logic would have you go make the moon a base ?

Why have a space system "iss" if we have a big fat rock? "wonders" ; )

Raise shields 100%! RED ALERT!

LOL,here is another force field technology being developed...

Space-borne protective energy systems, like the deflector shields on the fictional starship U.S.S. Voyager, are on the drawing board of real-world scientists.

These "cold plasmas" -- analogs to the sophisticated defensive grids envisioned by Star Trek's creators -- are ambient-temperature, ionized gases related to those found deep within the sun’s core.

Such plasmas are capable of shielding satellites and other spacecraft, making them invisible to radars, or both. Nor will they fry electronics or melt metal.

have you read Ralph Ring's and Otis T. Carr's interviews before??

here's just a sample of Carr's interview from 1957 - he references this electro-magnetic force field from his flying saucer prototype [read the WHOLE article for the best understanding of this fascinating interview! (you WON'T regret this!!)]...

Q: As we calculated, the speed of the circumference was 1263 miles per hour. It gets kind of warm at that, doesn't it?

OTC: No, it won't because it has its own protection field which is its electro-magnetic actuation...

OTC: ...This is the field we are testing, you do not have a heat barrier in forward velocity at all. This electro-magnetic field is being tested out now in conventional aircraft and proved very efficient. We have known that there is something a long time in our particular operation. We found out by actual physical tests.

OTC: On this craft, insofar as the individuals are concerned, can travel the same as in a pressurized airliner. We don't have the problem of a heat shield.

LJ: What about high velocity?

OTC: We don't have a problem of thermal barriers because the electro-magnetic system sets up a protective shield in our craft which enables us to overcome this barrier without any discomfort to the occupants inside the craft. And we can very slowly rise, and once we are outside the atmosphere, we can accelerate to tremendous velocities up to the speed of light itself.

Q: None whatsoever. As we calculated, the speed of the circumference was 1263 miles per hour. It gets kind of warm at that, doesn't it?

OTC: No, it won't because it has its own protection field which is its electro-magnetic actuation.

that all may sound random and, without a doubt, lacking in detail, so please, if you'd like to be moderately enlightened, read that entire O.T.C. interview, and check out the one from Ralph Ring as well!

Interesting!

You can also make your shields using an electro-statically charged plate and an ion beam. It's nowhere near as powerful as 'Trek shields. But lets you see how a rudimentary 'force fields' might work and be able to deflect small rocks, bits of aluminum, or sand around it if thrown to it.

It's a very dangerous experiment though due to use of high power and high voltage electricity.

thats very very interesting
i wonder if the system is always on or if it is reactive.

'cuase em fields of that intesnsity arent good for the human body

By the way its not at like star trek sheilds, which are a bubble of transparent aluminum projected by a transporter system and sustained by a replicator, and energy absorbed by them is redirected into space by the main defeflector array.
