BEWARE THE MARS HOAX: On August 27, 2009, Mars will come so close to Earth, the red planet will be as big as a full Moon in the night sky. If you believe that, you've just fallen for the Mars Hoax. It's a viral email filled with misinformation that has many readers circling August 27th on their calendars. Don't bother. Mars will be 243 million km from Earth on that date. If you really want to see the red planet as large as a full Moon, you'll need a rocketship.

Someone who never sends me anything intelligent or useful, just fluffy stuff and chain emails, sends me this hoax almost EVERY YEAR. It drives me nuts! I send her a link to Snopes--every year. Last year she didn't send it and I send her an email thanking her.

I'm just waiting for her to send it this year.

What is the point of this hoax? Is it to target stupid people who can be fooled annually by the same kooky joke?
