Here's an image taken from a more recent dig that is described by one of the field workers as having a buffed or grooved line crossing the face of
several stones, possibly indication some sort of shaping after the stones were in place:
Here is an excellent link describing stone setting methods used by the Inca, relying especially on scribing a stone to fit the adjoining stones in a
wall. No "sliding back and forth" to wear it into place is mentioned.
