India urges emerging nations to oppose 'green protectionism'

India urged other emerging countries to oppose developed countries' efforts to force developing nations to make binding commitments on reducing their carbon emissions or pay tariffs.
"'Green' is becoming a new label for protection. We are now seeing on grounds of 'level-playing field' and 'competitiveness', developing nations will be forced to make binding commitment on emissions reduction or pay tariff," Shyam Saran, India P.M.'s Special Envoy on Climate Change, said.

Doesn't it seem that, after decrying the Bush "go it alone" diplomacy, Obama and his 'anti-carbon team' have adopted that same approach when his administration pushes for immediate regulation, taxes and laws governing Americans' use of carbon-based resources, despite clear signs from developing nations, Australia, the EU and the UK that draconian measures are neither wise nor justified?

The Special Envoy's remarks came at a meeting of representatives of the four BRIC countries -- Brazil, Russia, India and China -- to prepare for the first BRIC summit set for next month in Russia.

The BRIC countries account for 40 percent of the world's population and 40 percent of global gross domestic product.
Together, they also account for the majority of the GHG emissions of the world.

Now, it seems, they are uniting to oppose any unilateral or multi-lateral imposition of taxes or regulations on carbon emissions that will interfere with their economic growth.

India's top climate negotiator said there should be high level talks between Brazil, Russia, India and China on a proposed global pact to combat climate change before the first BRIC summit in Russia next month, organised by the Observer Research Foundation (ORF).

"This is necessary to give the necessary push at the BRIC level to the serious issue of climate change," said Saran, describing energy security and climate change as "two sides of the same coin".

The BRIC summit should send a clear message that "green protectionism" and "the so-called green tariff" are not acceptable to developing countries, he added. "Green should not become a label for protectionism."

So, Obama, et al, proceed to punish U.S. business and consumers while the major contributors to GHG emissions gather and unite to oppose the ultimate goals of the U.N.'s Copenghagen Convention.

Does Obama heed the desires and sense of the American public and his own agencies, or those of the U.N. and the AGW advocates?
(Even as his own agencies are warning that proposed regualtions are misguided and unsupported!)
