If you're taking a Sociology class, then they'd be ripping you off by NOT spending a great deal of time focusing on Marx. If it's an Economics class then you might have reason for concern.

I did a Sociology Degree at university, never really helped me find a proper job , but was instrumental in waking me up from thinking the world was right!
An introduction to Marxist theories, will help you see how the game is rigged in favour of those who own the means of production. Why you feel alienated from your own work and why capitalism is unsustainable and wastefull.

I imagine it's more difficult for those in the USA to swallow as it goes against what your country stands for, but I'm sure your teacher doesn't have any plans to send your to an enforced labour camp in syberia if you disagree

2 Million died in Soviet Gulags
100 million died in Cultural Revolution and Great Leap Forward in China

Clearly this death count should be reason enough to reject the Ideology.

I suppose militaristic self obsessed capitalism is the way to go when it comes to including death tolls into ideological evaluations?

That has nothing to do with Marxism and everything to do with Stalin and Mao being mentalists.

For someone so quick to recommend Animal Farm you seem to have completely missed the point of the novel.

Orwell passionately believed in democracy within a socialist framework, but was heartbroken by the fact that due to the falibility of man it would never be achieved.

How do you know what a Marxist is? Have you read the Communist Manifesto, or anything else by Marx? Most kids wouldn't know a Marxist from a socialist from a capitalist. If you go to a public school, and have a bank account, I find your cries of Marxism amusing.
